Pundit Predictions: Gallas, Merson and Sutton All Tipping Arsenal to Sweep Aside Liverpool

The consensus amongst experts seems to lie with Arsenal this weekend as the Gunners aim to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta masterminded a superlative performance last time out as a frenetic Emirates Stadium witnessed the league leaders dominate their neighbours Tottenham in a memorable 3-1 win.

Meanwhile, Liverpool, who are currently 8/5 in football betting, are in desperate need of all three points if they are to remain competitive in the race for the title. An enthralling 3-3 draw at home to Brighton last weekend has left them lagging behind Sunday’s opponents, and a defeat would see a cataclysmic 14-point gap open up.

William Gallas Arsenal vs Liverpool Prediction

The ex-Arsenal captain is confident his former side will continue their imperious form of late, citing the fact he expects it be an open game which should favour the home side.

The Frenchman also bemoaned Liverpool’s defensive frailties so far this season, which he believes will be exposed in a comfortable 3-1 win for the Gunners.

“I will back Arsenal to win this game, that is for sure. I think 3-1 to Arsenal because it will be an open game.Arsenal, don’t let me down please! [They] must take advantage of the shape that Liverpool are in.

“I think it would be a big disappointment if Arsenal fail to beat Liverpool at the Emirates, especially after their victory against Tottenham. When you see the performances of Liverpool this season, at the weekend against Brighton, it is a great opportunity to beat them.

“Liverpool are struggling at the moment. The performance against Brighton didn’t surprise me because they look like a different team this season.

“There have been warning signs all season. They look weaker without Sadio Mane. At the back, they have been really, really poor.Alexander-Arnold is struggling. The problem with Liverpool is that almost every goal is coming from Alexander-Arnold’s side of the pitch.

“He is playing far too high. From an attacking perspective, we all know that he has great quality and he can deliver plenty of crosses and create chances for his team-mates to score from, but when he has to defend he is not strong enough.

“I’m not surprised by his performances. I think over the last few years, because of what he can do going forward, creating so many assists, people failed to see the weaknesses in his game as a defender. His first job is to defend very well. How many goals have Liverpool conceded from his mistakes? Nobody talks about this when you’re winning games.

“Liverpool were on fire, winning games, winning trophies and the number of assists he registered was magnificent, but these errors were always in his game.

“For Arsenal, this is the right time to play Liverpool.”

Paul Merson Arsenal vs Liverpool Prediction

Ex-Arsenal striker Paul Merson is of a similar belief to Gallas in that the league leaders will get the win, but he is expecting it be a considerably tougher fixture than the one they experienced against Tottenham.

He cites Liverpool’s lacklustre midfield to be overrun by a rampant Arsenal force in the middle, particularly with Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey hitting a rich vein of form.

“This is a harder game for Arsenal than the Tottenham one and I say this because the fans and the players were naturally hyped for the derby.

“If Arsenal win against Liverpool and manage to stay close to Manchester City in the coming months, they could well be contenders for the Premier League title this season.

“The Reds will have a bit more rest heading into the much-anticipated Premier League clash, but on current form, Arsenal are probably favourites as things stand. Liverpool played four forwards against Rangers and dominated the game as they secured a 2-0 win at Anfield.

“Against Arsenal, though, I think they’ll get ripped to shreds if they play Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara against the likes of Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard as the Gunners trio have been in sublime form this season.

“Roberto Firmino could come back into the team for this one, while Fabinho could slot into midfield to give them some more protection away from home. just fancy Arsenal, but I’m not as confident as I was against Tottenham.

There was no way Arsenal were going to lose that game, I’m not as sure with this one as it represents a different test for the table toppers. This is a massive game for the Gunners and could be one of the biggest tests of Arteta’s managerial career so far.”

Chris Sutton Arsenal vs Liverpool Prediction

Lastly, we arrive with the most outlandish prediction of the three as Chris Sutton expects another dominant Arsenal display. The BT pundit believes the Reds’ lack of conviction at the back will be exploited by a free-flowing Arsenal attack.

”It felt like Lawro never predicted Liverpool to lose at all in more than 20 years of his predictions – but I don’t just think they will get beaten on Sunday, I think they will get hammered.

“I think Liverpool will score, even though they have not quite clicked yet this season, but Arsenal’s attacking talent are going to cause them a lot of problems at the other end.”
