According to reports, West Ham’s record signing Lucas Paqueta could leave the Hammers if they fail to stay in the Premier League this year.

The Brazilian signed for David Moyes’ side for £43m in the summer, after an impressive spell at Ligue 1 side, Lyon. However, a mix of injuries and poor performances has dampened his impact on the team, with the midfielder only contributing to four goals in 18 league matches.

Paqueta’s time in France was what originally enticed the side from east London, scoring 21 and assisting 13 in 80 matches for the French giants. This, alongside his continuous inclusion in the Brazil squad caused numerous clubs to inquire about his services, but it was West Ham who sealed the deal.

His lack of quality this season has been symbolic for the majority of his teammates so far, leaving the Hammers in and amongst the relegation zone. Moyes has been scruitinised heavily for his side’s display in the Premier League and could be the next manager to receive their marching orders.

The 25-year-old’s future at the club could be doubtful if West Ham face relegation, with the player showing he belongs in the top division. Despite the player’s agent remaining adamant that Paqueta’s main focus is to keep the Hammers in the Premier League, failure to do so could see the pair part ways.

The Brazil international signed a five-year deal with West Ham also including the option to add another year, meaning that leaving would be easier said than done. Securing him for over four years would boost the clubs chances of pushing for Europe next season, should they stay up.

Supporters will be hoping for a mark of loyalty from Paqueta, as his midfield partner Declan Rice is set to finally leave his boyhood club. Meaning the Hammers cannot afford to lose any more of their star players, especially with rival clubs looking to strengthen.
