Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that his side are “not in the position to think about being champions” after their disappointing loss against Tottenham Hotpsur.

Harry Kane’s 15th minute strike was all it took to separate both sides come the final whistle. The England captain notched his 200th Premier League goal, and his 267th Tottenham Hotspur goal, becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

The Citizens couldn’t come up with a response to Kane’s first-half strike. Spurs played out the final minutes with 10-men after Cristian Romero was dismissed for a second yellow-card.

It was an opportunity missed for Pep Guardiola’s men, who could’ve closed the gap on league-leaders Arsenal to two points, after the Gunners were defeated by Sean Dyche’s Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester City remain in second place, and remain five points adrift of Mikel Arteta’s side after 21 Premier League matches.

Arsenal also have a game-in-hand on City, meaning a win would would see the Gunners go eight points clear at the summit of the Premier League table.

Guardiola highlighted his disappointment in dropping vital points in his post-match interview.

“We are not in the position to think about being champions, just to think what’s the next game, Aston Villa. We will prepare well and play our game as best as possible,” he said.

“Tottenham has a fantastic squad, team and manager and they punish you.

“They have a lot of quality up front and don’t need much with transitions, set pieces, give a lot of credit to them.”

Guardiola spoke on his side’s recent record at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Sooner or later it is going to change, but it is strange we haven’t scored one goal, we have missed penalties in the past.

“To find an explanation is not easy.

“We found the positions, made good balls to the channels, but missed the last action up front.”

Man City are back in Premier League action next Sunday. They host Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side, with kick-off at 16:30 UK time.

Premier League betting sites now have Manchester City priced at around 11/8 to retain their title.
