Manchester United have announced that Christian Eriksen will be out until late April or early May after suffering an injury in Saturday’s FA Cup win against Reading.

Christian Eriksen to miss three months with injury

The Danish midfielder left Old Trafford in crutches after being hit by a tackle from former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll and will now miss most of United’s final stretch.

The incident went unpunished by the referee but Carroll was later awarded a second yellow card and dismissed from Reading’s 3-1 loss as Casemiro’s brace and Fred’s cheeky flick secured United’s place in the FA Cup fifth round.

Eriksen has played a key part in Manchester United’s early season success, with one foot in the Carabao Cup final and continued progress in the Premier League for Erik ten Hag’s side.

According to Premier League betting sites, United are third-favourites to win the title this season behind odds-on leaders Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who are searching for a third consecutive crown.

The Dutchman spoke fondly of the 30-year-old, who has tallied the second-most assists in the Premier League this season with seven – behind only Kevin De Bruyne.

“I wish it hadn’t happened. It’s quite clear Christian brings top quality to our squad and he has some specifics that are hard to replace.

“I think you can never fill that [gap] because very player has his own characteristics, identity, another player will always fill in a different way, but it doesn’t mean you have to be less successful.

“It’s quite clear Christian Eriksen brings top quality to our squad and he has some specifics that are hard to replace, such as his impacts in the final third with his final ball.”

Will Manchester United bring in another midfielder on Deadline Day?

According to Sky in Germany, Manchester United have already acted upon Eriksen’s untimely injury and have enquired to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.

Chelsea have also enquired about the 28-year-old who has made 15 Bundesliga appearances so far this season and seven starts with one goal and one assist.
