Manchester United are in talks with Bayern Munich to sign Austrian midfielder Marcel Sabitzer on deadline day.

Following the news that Christian Eriksen will be out until late April or early May with an injury suffered in Saturday’s 3-1 FA Cup win vs Reading, United have acted quickly.

Marcel Sabitzer has made 15 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich this season including seven starts, scoring once and assisting once as the German giants sit top of the table.

The 28-year-old is known as a versatile midfielder, able to play in both attacking and defensive roles with a well-balanced skillset to further Erik ten Hag’s search for silverware.

Will Marcel Sabitzer join Manchester United on deadline day?

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are pushing in talks with the German side to sign Sabitzer who is said to prefer a move away from Munich in favour of Manchester – the complete opposite of Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.

According to Premier League betting sites, United are third-favourites to win the title this season behind odds-on leaders Arsenal and Manchester City who are searching for a third consecutive crown.

The Old Trafford side have found success with a midfield pairing of Casemiro and Eriksen so far this season but will now need to look elsewhere for a suitable replacement and Sabitzer fits the bill.

Despite reported interest from Chelsea, Romano says the London club are currently busy with other deals and not focused on Sabitzer as things stand – instead looking to complete the signing of Benfica’s Enzo Fernandes.

United’s fellow top four rival Arsenal have also strengthened in the midfield and look set to sign Jorginho from Chelsea as Mikel Arteta aims to make a strong push for the title in May.
