Manchester United are in pole position to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa with David de Gea’s future in doubt.

Diogo Costa Likely Destination Is Old Trafford

With the Spaniard’s contract set to expire later this month, Erik ten Hag is eager to bring Costa in as a replacement.

However United will have to pay a big fee for the Portugal international. Costa’s current contract runs out in 2027, and he has a release clause of roughly £70m, with Porto not willing to sell for any less than that.

The 23-year-old could become the Red Devils’ number one, with the out-of-favour De Gea looking increasingly likely not to be at the club next season.

De Gea’s performances over the past 18 months have been inconsistent. Although he has agreed a new deal with United, it is yet to be signed off by the club’s hierarchy. If he is to extend his stay, his current salary of £375,000-per-week would be significantly reduced.

Meaning if Costa was to sign for United, he would compete with De Gea for a starting spot – if the veteran is still around.

United are favourites for the signing of Diogo Costa, but Chelsea and Newcastle are also interested in his signature.

The Portuguese shot-stopper suits Ten Hag’s playing style, and is much more stronger with the ball at his feet than De Gea. His distribution is one of the best in Europe, which United are a fan of.
