City boss Pep Guardiola will have to cope with some of his key players being unavailable, with one certainty being Foden. The club released a statement on Sunday afternoon confirming that Foden had undergone an operation for appendicitis. They didn’t confirm how long the winger would be out for, but did say he’ll miss the Liverpool game.

The statement read: “Manchester City can confirm Phil Foden has left the England squad after undergoing surgery in London for acute appendicitis,

“Phil will now return to Manchester to begin rehabilitation.

“He will not be fit for this weekend’s Premier League game at home to Liverpool and it is unclear at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.

“Everyone at Manchester City wishes Phil a speedy recovery.”

As for Erling Haaland, the striker picked up a groin injury after scoring a hat-trick in City’s 6-0 hammering of Burnley in the FA Cup last weekend. Despite being called up for Norway’s international games, he was later withdrawn from the squad. His father believes it is “touch and go” as to whether his son will feature this weekend.

Alfie Haaland was speaking to the media over the weekend.

I think it’s ‘touch and go’, yes. You can’t just go two weeks without training and then jump right into a fight. There must be a progression there.

“They can gamble on it, but if he doesn’t get proper training with the team, then he won’t play. It is about how he responds to treatment in the next few days. He needs a lot of care and ‘knuckling’. There are many sprints and there is a lot to move.”

Before he added: “He would very much like to have played these two international matches.

“But he must prioritise his health, try to get his body back in place. Based on the assumptions, he is doing well, but he is very sad.”
