Everton were handed a 10-point deduction last week for their breaches of financial fair play. A point deduction that now sees them in a relegation spot. The question being asked now is; when is it Manchester City’s turn to face the wrath of the FA and Premier League?
What did Manchester City do?
In February, Manchester City were accused of 115 financial breaches that spanned from 2009-2018. This includes failing to give ‘accurate financial information’. Also, alleged FFP and profit and sustainability breaches.
Manchester City’s punishment is likely to be more severe than Everton’s given the number of breaches. However, an outcome will be much more delayed than Everton’s, also, given the number of breaches.
When will the verdict arrive?
The Sun reported that Manchester City’s ‘D-Day’ could come as early as next year.
Football finance expert from Stefan Borson said: “There are too many things that ‘might’ happen if City are found against. It will be very serious — all hell will break loose.
“It will turn into an enormous story — not just in respect of football but much wider than that. So many parties will be implicated.
“It will be an incredibly explosive situation.”
He added: “From a football perspective, it’s impossible to think City would not be relegated if all of these things were found against them.”
When City were charged with 115 FFP rule breaches in February, there were reports that it could take up to four years for the verdict to be known.
Borson says it could be sooner, adding: “The hearing is likely to be in 2024 at some point.
“The Premier League are bound to be concerned about what they would do if City are found guilty. The fact the League charged City with such serious matters shows you this is a very bold move.”
Chelsea were also in the news last week as another club who may have broke FFP rules whilst they were under Roman Abramovich. The report was that he was making secret payments to agents, players and Chelsea officials.
