A few lucky punters have landed an incredible 225/1 single after Wednesday evening’s Madrid derby ended with zero cards in normal time for the first time since 1974.

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid‘s fierce rivalry typically guarantees some fiery challenges and plenty of bookings, however Javier Alberola Rojas brandished just one yellow card during Wednesday night’s Super Cup semi-final between the pair.

That card came in the dying moments of extra-time as Los Blancos secured a Madrid derby victory and their spot in the final via a 5-3 win, with ex-Manchester City winger Brahim Diaz being cautioned for celebrating his late goal by taking his shirt off.

It was a historical clash in terms of stats, with eight goals being scored in a Madrid derby for the first time since 1950, Real scoring five against Atleti for the first time since 1984, and had Diaz avoided being booked late on – it would’ve been the first time since 1974 that no yellow cards were shown in the fixture.

Despite the booking in the dying moments of extra-time though, bookmakers pay out certain selections in cup competitions after the first 90 minutes are completed. This includes some forms of card bets, meaning that those who backed zero cards to be shown in the match would be paid out and considered as winners.

Given the unlikelihood of a cardless Madrid derby, several leading UK betting sites priced ‘Under 0.5 Total Cards’ and ‘Exactly 0 Cards’ at an incredible 225/1. For context, a £5 bet on the selection would have returned a whopping £1,130.

Not many would’ve backed the improbable single, but lucky punter Sam Hollis-Iles did and took to Twitter to celebrate his win as he earned £226 in returns off of a mere £1 stake.

The other semi-final sees Copa del Rey runners-up Osasuna go head-to-head against reigning La Liga champions Barcelona on Thursday night, with Real Madrid awaiting the winner in Sunday evening’s final.

A victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side would see England international Jude Bellingham lift his first piece of silverware since arriving in the Spanish capital last summer, which would be Los Blancos’ 13th time being crowned as winners of the competition (second most behind Barcelona’s 14).
