Liverpool are ‘increasingly unlikely’ to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham this summer amid stronger interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Earlier this month, Dortmund were knocked out of the Champions League round of 16 by Chelsea and the defeat could act as a potential turning point in the 19-year-old’s young career.

Dortmund have not won a Bundesliga title since 2012 and most of the club’s top talents over the years have been sold to major sides across Europe.

Ahead of an expiring contract in 2025, Bellingham is tipped to depart the Black and Yellows this summer in favour of a new challenge elsewhere.

Real Madrid lead race to sign Jude Bellingham ahead of Man City and Liverpool

According to the latest odds, Real Madrid are the new favourites to sign Bellingham this summer where he could become just the sixth Englishman of all-time to play for Los Blancos.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Monday morning that Liverpool are increasingly unlikely to sign the teenager due to the expected price and financial power of rivals.

There is no release clause in his contract, meaning Dortmund have no incentive to sell the player and could demand a world-record fee.

Liverpool’s ‘reticence about entering a bidding war at the level expected’ is thought to be a significant roadblock between bringing Bellingham to Anfield.

Bellingham is known to be a fan of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and when asked if he could swap shirts with any player in the sport’s history, he replied:

“Stevie G, easily to be fair. In fact, no it is not easy, I think him or [Wayne] Rooney are definitely close. But I think them two by quite a way.

“But I think I would go Gerrard, though just because the No.8 [shirt], similar position to me, so yeah, I would probably go with him.

“I love Stevie G to be fair.”
