Lawrence Okolie Record

The WBO World Cruiserweight Title was on the line on May 27th as Lawrence Okolie lost his world crown to former teammate and friend, Chris Billam-Smith.

Last time out Okolie suffered the first defeat of his career at the hands of ‘CBS’. Prior to that in his professional career, ‘The Sauce’ hadn’t put a foot wrong. In his 20 professional fights, he has had his hand raised each and every time bar one.

Of those 20 bouts, Okolie has finished 14 of his opponents inside the scheduled distance. Since making his professional debut back in 2017, the 31-year-old won six of his first seven fights by stoppage. Since then in his next 13 fights, he had another seven stoppage victories.

The only fighters who have gone the full scheduled distance with Lawrence Okolie are Isaac Chamberlain, Blaise Mendouo, Matty Askin, Michel Cieslak, David Light and Chris Billam-Smith last time out. Before the Cieslak world title defence, Okolie has had seven knockouts on the spin.

‘The Sauce’ has had a fantastic boxing career so far. Almost punch perfect. He has gradually stepped up levels each and every time he has fought. He beat Isaac Chamberlain via unanimous decision in a 50/50 fight in just his eighth fight.

Since then, Okolie has picked up a whole host of belts too. He won the Commonwealth Cruiserweight Title against Luke Watkins, before claiming the famous British Title in just his nineth fight after that. Just four fights later he won the European Cruiserweight Title by stopping Yves Ngabu in seven rounds.

Just two fights after that, Okolie then claimed his maiden world title by defeating Krzysztof Glowacki for the vacant WBO World Cruiserweight Title in February 2021. Okolie’s gradual rise through the rankings, all the way up to becoming world champion, is nothing short of magnificent.

His third was a unanimous decision victory in February 2023 against mandatory challenger David Light.

Okolie then lost his belt after suffering the first defeat of his professional career against Chris Billam-Smith. Okolie was knocked down three times on his way to losing a majority decision to Billam-Smith in Bournemouth in May 2023, losing his WBO World Cruiserweight Title in the process.

‘The Sauce’ was priced around 2/7 with the best boxing betting sites pre-fight to defend his world title and beat his former stablemate ‘The Gentleman’, but Billam-Smith had other ideas.
