Jordan 2023 Asian Cup Preview
Jordan head into the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar rated as 100/1 outsiders to lift the title with numerous leading football betting apps, as they make their fifth appearance at the tournament’s finals. Their best ever Asian Cup finishes came in 2004 and 2011, where they exited the competition in the quarter-finals.
In the 2019 edition of the tournament, Jordan upset all the odds to finish top of their group ahead of Australia, Palestine and Syria, recording a famous 1-0 win over the Aussies in their opening match. The glory was short lived though, as their unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt end in the last-16 as they were knocked out by Vietnam after a penalty shootout.
The Chivalrous Ones are expected to advance through the group stage once again this time around, priced as second favourites at 8/1 to win Group E behind South Korea, with Malaysia and Bahrain rated as outsiders.
Their campaign gets underway on 15 January against Malaysia in Al Wakrah, followed by what is almost certain to be their toughest game of the group against the Koreans in Doha, before they round off their group stage action in Al Rayyan against Bahrain on 25 January.
Jordan Player To Watch
Hussein Ammouta’s side have few, if any, household names among football fans across the globe. When looking at their 26-man squad though, there is a clear standout player to keep an eye on, and that’s Montpellier winger Musa Al-Taamari.
After the culmination of his three-year contract with OH Leuven in Belgium, Al-Taamari had numerous offers from Spain, England, Turkey, the United States, and more, however he opted for a move across the border to France. In doing so, the 26-year-old became the first Jordanian to ever sign with a Ligue 1 club.
His pace and trickery have been a real asset to La Paillade, as he now has three goals and three assists in just 16 French top flight appearances for the club, seeing him earn comparisons to Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah.
Al-Taamari’s record for Jordan is strong too with 13 goals in 63 appearances, making him the second-highest scorer within his nation’s Asian Cup squad. If Jordan are to have any success in Qatar, Al-Taamari will undoubtedly be right at the heart of it, which is why we’ve identified him as the nation’s player to watch at the tournament.
