The Irish Champion Stakes 2022 sees the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained VADENI topping the betting for today’s big Group One contest (10th Sept). The talented 3 year-old was last seen winning the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown – a race last year’s Irish Champion Stakes winner – St Mark Basilica – also landed before heading to Leopardstown.

So, can Vadeni repeat the feat and win both the Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes in the same season? We take a look at his chance, the Irish Champion Stakes main rivals, plus have the latest betting and key betting trends to help.

Vadeni Tops The 2022 Irish Champion Stakes Betting

vadeni
Vadeni

The French-trained VADENI @ 11/8 with BetUK heads into Saturday’s Irish Champion Stakes off the back of three wins, with the last two coming at the highest level. Therefore, he’s arguably bringing the best 3 year-old (classic generation) form to the table and so it’s no shock to see him topping the 2022 Irish Champion Stakes betting (see latest odds below) for all the bookies.

The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained runner was last seen winning the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park (watch below) – a race last year’s Irish Champion Stakes winner St Mark’s Basilica also won before taking glory at Leopardstown. Vadeni has not been out since (70 days) so has been freshened-up with this prize the target.

Vadeni Beat Mishriff Last Time and Acts On Any Ground

Vadeni has now won five of his 7 career runs and had Mishriff, who is also entered for Saturday’s race, back in second (albeit only a head) last time in the Eclipse. This 1m2f trip looks ideal for this son of Churchill and he’s a horse that acts on any ground – his last two wins have come on good-to-firm and soft.

Being a 3 year-old he also gets a handy 6lbs from the older horses in the race and we’ve seen 11 winners aged 3 in the last 20 runnings of the Irish Champion Stakes. While with 17 of the last 20 winners of this race running at Sandown, York or Ascot last time – he also ticks this key trend.

Vadeni will also be hoping to give his owner – HH Aga Khan IV – his third winner in the Irish Champion Stakes after taking the prize in 1996 (Timarida) and Azamour (2004).

Christophe Soumillon (Vadeni’s rider) told the Racing Post “He had a small break for a month and a half. Jean-Claude [Rouget] will have given him a chance to grow up a bit and take a bit of muscle. Hopefully he’ll have the same ability to quicken. It’s always easier when you have a horse like him with a great turn of foot, but also when they relax, especially when racing overseas in the best races. The way he did it at Sandown indicated to me that he’ll be able to do well at a track like Leopardstown.”

Aidan O’Brien Has Ten Irish Champion Stakes Wins

Aidan OBrien 1
Aidan OBrien

Aidan O’Brien is ‘Mr Irish Champion Stakes’ with a remarkable 10 wins to his name – including the last three. The latest was the Ryan Moore-ridden St Mark’s Basilica (watch at the end of this article), who also landed the Coral-Eclipse earlier that season.

O’Brien has several 2022 Irish Champion Stakes entries this year, but his 3 year-old LUXEMBOURG @ 7/2 with BetUK is the shortest in the betting at this stage. This Camelot colt has won four of his 5 starts to date and has been lightly-raced this season.

He was a fair third in the English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket back at the end of April (watch below) and has only been out once more, when winning the G3 Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh on Aug 13th.

Luxembourg Enjoyed The Step Up In Trip Last Time

That was Luxembourg’s first try over 1m2f too, but despite only winning by a neck it was a workmanlike effort and he saw out the extra yardage well and being by Camelot could even improve further for trying this trip again, or further. He likely needed that run too after a break with a setback, so can be expected to be much sharper this time.

He looks a live threat to Vadeni and being a 3 year-old also gets a handy 6lbs allowance from the older horses. From O’Brien’s 10 winners in this race 50% have been aged 3.

Aidan O’Brien, trainer told the Racing Post “We were very happy with him going into it [the Royal Whip], but we knew there would be a lot more improvement to come. We were delighted with what he did in the race and how he’s come out of it. We knew that race was the only real chance we had to run him before the Irish Champion and he needed a run before going to Leopardstown.”

O’Brien Also Has Stone Age and Broome

Aidan O’Brien also has CD winners Stone Age and Broome in the race – both are decent horses on their day too but need to bounce back from average recent runs.

Stone Age was 6th in the Epsom Derby after not quite staying the 1m4f trip and last seen running two races in America in the Belmont and Saratoga Invitational Derby. This 1m2f suits and being a 3 year-old gets a handy 6lbs from the older horses.

Broome was a Royal Ascot winner in June when an easy winner of the Hardwicke Stakes and on that run would have a chance. Is only rated 5lbs off Vadeni, but might not be easy having to give 6lbs away to the French runner, while the drop back to 1m2f isn’t certain to suit.

Mishriff Will Be Looking To Give Gosden His Fourth Irish Champion Stakes Win Since 2013

mishriff
Mishriff

Since 2022 we’ve only seen four 5 year-old winners of the Irish Champion Stakes, but two of those have come in the last five years. The John Gosden-trained MISHRIFF @ 4/1 with BetUK will be hoping to add to that 5 year-old record this Saturday and also gain revenge on Vadeni, who touched him off by just a neck in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown back in July.

Mishriff has been out twice more since that Sandown run – third in the King George at Ascot and second to the mighty Baaeed in the Juddmonte International at York last month (watch below)

Was Mishriff Unlucky In Eclipse?

Many also feel that Mishriff was unlucky in the Eclipse behind Vadeni in July. He went down by just a neck at the line but got slightly hampered a furlong out and had to be switched – just failing in the end.

However, he’s had two race to prove that theory right and he’s been well back both times. Yes, the last was at the hands of Baaeed, but Mishriff is now on a five race losing run and his only success in this last eight was in the 2021 Juddmonte at York. A classy sort on his day, but has he become a tad hard to win with and being a 5 year-old it won’t be easy having to get weight away to the younger horses.

Ted Voute, racing manager to owner Prince Faisal told the Racing Post “Obviously with a stud career on the horizon it would be nice to get another win next to his name. He is in good order and it looks the right race for him as he likes going left-handed.”
