Iraq 2023 Asian Cup Preview
Iraq go into the 2023 Asian Cup as relative outsiders at odds of 33/1 with UK betting sites to claim their second Asian Cup triumph. They of course won the tournament back in 2007, beating Saudi Arabia in the final over 16 years ago.
This year, Iraq feature in Group D alongside pre-tournament favourites Japan, as well as huge outsiders Vietnam and Indonesia. Iraq are favourites with football betting apps to progress from Group D behind Japan, which would secure a place in the Last 16 of the tournament.
Iraq fans will be quietly confident of a strong run here at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, boasting strong form in qualifying competitions prior to this tournament. Their last game was a 1-0 defeat to second favourites for the Asian Cup South Korea, which shows that on their day they can compete with anyone.
Iraq should qualify from their group, and are expected to do so judging by the prices set by online gambling sites. Jesús Casas’ side hammered fellow Group D side Indonesia in 2026 World Cup qualification in November, before following that up five days later with a victory over Vietnam on their travels.
Some might say Iraq have a strong chance of making it into the later stages of the 2023 Asian Cup as a big underdog.
Iraq Player To Watch
As relative outsiders at the 2023 Asian Cup, some of Iraq’s players may go under the radar. However, the same cannot be said for 21-year-old striker Ali Al-Hamadi. He is certainly one to watch for Iraq as we embark on the 2023 Asian Cup.
Al-Hamadi current plays his trade for AFC Wimbledon in English Football League Two. He has been one of the top goal scorers in League 2 this season for the Dons, netting 13 times in the league alone. He also has six assists to his name in league in just 23 games.
His record for his country is a strong one too. The 21-year-old has just 11 appearances for Iraq, but has scored on three occasions. All three of these goals came in the last few months of 2023. He is also the designated penalty taker for his country, so could certainly add to his tally in the 2023 Asian Cup.
Al-Hamadi is a seriously talented forward, who has been linked to several Championship clubs already in the January transfer window. He will unlikely leave Wimbledon this season, but is certainly good enough to one day play in the Premier League if he keeps his strong form up.
Ali Al-Hamadi is certainly worth keeping an eye on for the 2007 Asian Cup champions over the course of the next few weeks in Qatar.
