Hong Kong 2023 Asian Cup Preview
Hong Kong go into the 2023 Asian Cup as the biggest outsiders and lowest ranked team in the competition at odds of 500/1 with football betting apps to win the tournament. Head coach Jørn Andersen has guided Hong Kong to their first Asian Cup qualification in 55 years.
UK betting sites feel Hong Kong are the weakest team in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, pricing them as 5/1 even to qualify from Group C and as big as 80/1 to win their group and progress to the knockout stages.
The best online gambling sites have made it clear they don’t feel Hong Kong are any real threat at this year’s tournament. However, write them off at your peril.
They weren’t expected to even make it to the 2023 Asian Cup, so would you put it past them pulling off yet another monumental upset and qualifying from their group? Only time will tell.
Hong Kong Player To Watch
Hong Kong’s best achievement in football was a third place finish at the 1956 Asian Cup as the host nation. After a 55 year absence from the tournament from 1968, they are back in the fold and even have their very own young protégé coming through the ranks.
After giving up his Nigerian passport, Michael Udebuluzor became eligible to represent Hong Kong national team. Since then, he has made five appearances for Hong Kong, scoring two goals. His debut came in September 2023, with his first goals coming in the same game – a brace against Bhutan in October.
Udebuluzor plays in Germany for club side Ingolstadt 04. He has been promoted to the first team of late thanks to his incredibly record for Ingolstadt 04 second team. He scored eight goals in 12 appearances for the reserves, getting himself a call up to the first team in 3.Liga.
Although it unlikely Hong Kong qualify from Group C, they have a player in Michael Udebuluzor who will likely lead the line for his country for years to come. He is certainly Hong Kong’s main player to watch at the 2023 Asian Cup.
