Gary Lineker
Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker has been at the forefront of the news for the past few days as his controversial comments on Twitter saw the Match of the Day Presenter suspended from the show.

Although Lineker is set to return to the BBC this weekend, before he announced his return ITV were set to offer the host triple the pay he currently earns to come work for them. Despite not taking the pay rise, Lineker still earns the most at the BBC but what other sports presenters are on the big bucks?

5. Jermaine Jenas £220,000-£224,999

Jermaine Jenas

Jermaine Jenas comes in at number five on our list and the young presenter has certainly made some major moves in his TV career since retiring from football in 2016.

Jenas became a freelance pundit before joining BT Sport in 2014 and has co-presented The One Show with Alex Jones since 2020 where he is most recognised.

With the recent drama and speculation surrounding Lineker’s presenting status on Match of the Day, many turned to Jenas as the obvious replacement on the BBC’s flagship sports programme however the 40-year old made his portion very clear saying that if asked to take Lineker’s place he would say no.

4. Mark Chapman £250,000-£254,999

Mark Chapman

Mark Chapman is one of the most veteran presenters at the BBC and first joined in 1996 as a continuity announcer on BBC Television which primarily saw him working on BBC Two.

Now Chapman mostly works on BBC Radio five Live and although he has presented other sports such as American Football, he is mostly known for his work on the radio and Match of the Day 2.

Chapman was also part of the boycott on the BBC last weekend, as the presenter stepped down from his role on BBC Radio five live on Saturday afternoon however he will return on the Monday Night Club tonight on 5live.

3. Jason Mohammad £285,000-£289,999

Jason Mohammed

Jason Mohammed is the highest paid sports presenter by the BBC and the 47-year old earns approximately £285,000 per year for presenting Final Score on Saturday afternoons.

Although Mohammed is perhaps known most for his work on Final Score, the presenter has also been known to branch out to other sports during his time at the BBC.

It was working on rugby and snooker for the BBC that earned Mohammed his job at Final Score and he has also enjoyed time covering the Olympics in 2016, as well as deputising for Lineker when he was unable to do Match of the Day.

2. Alan Shearer £450,000-£454,999

Coming in as the second highest paid sports presenter by the BBC is Alan Shearer, who works alongside Gary Lineker on match of the day.

Shearer enjoyed a sublime career in the Premier League and remains the top goalscorer of the top division with 260 goals, but now the former striker works as a presenter and pundit for the BBC and gets paid around £450,000 a year to do so making him the second highest paid sports presenter on the channel.

1. Gary Lineker £1,350,000-1,354,999

Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker remains the highest paid BBC sports presenter and it is by some significant distance, as the latest wage bill revealed that the Match of the Day presenter earns around £1.35 million per year from the BBC.

The astonishing £1.35 million that the 62-year old makes per year is in fact a decrease by 10% of the star’s wages from the year before which were over £1.4 million.

Although the BBC suspended Lineker last week, a wave of support came from the industry with co-presenters and friends all taking a stand with the presenter.

Lineker will return to Match of the Day this weekend and will be joined by Alan Shearer and Ian Wright as usual, who both agreed to strike last week out of solidarity to their host.
