Now that the domestic season has concluded, the perpetual rumour mill has begun. Harry Kane transfer news has been simmering beneath the surface all season after Tottenham failed to qualify for Europe in any shape or form, and a new potential suitor have reportedly thrown their hat into the ring.

Sensational reports of a concrete offer from Saudi Arabia, which is supposedly backed up by the Saudi Pro League and the nation’s government, have pricked the ears of Ballon D’or winner Karim Benzema.

The expectation heading into the summer was that the Real Madrid captain would stay put for at least another season, with Los Blancos reaching a verbal agreement over an extension earlier this month.

However, a hugely underwhelming swansong saw the reigning Champions League winners utterly dominated by Manchester City in the semi-finals. Bitter rivals Barcelona also lifted their first La Liga trophy in four years after opening up an 11 point gap.

The Frenchman hasn’t quite reached the dizzying level of performances we became accustomed to last season, hitting just 18 goals in Spain compared to his Pichichi-clinching 27 last term.

And now, as he mulls over a sensational £86m-per-year contract proposal from Saudi Arabia, his exit may be nearing fruition.

Florentino Perez and the Madrid hierarchy have always known replacing Benzema would be an arduous task, but they may have to scurry to find a suitable replacement in time for next season, should he decide to depart the club after 14 years in the Spanish capital.

According to the The Times, Harry Kane could be the one to fill that void.

The Spaniards have made no secret of their admiration for Tottenham’s newly-crowned all-time record goalscorer in the past, and he has often be viewed as the most suitable like-for-like replacement for Benzema.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will of course remain stubborn in negotiations, should Kane decide to bring the curtain down on his career in north London. However, with Barcelona adding this season’s La Liga’s top scorer Robert Lewandowksi last summer, Madrid simply cannot afford to slip further behind, with Mariano Diaz their only recognised back-up striker.
