Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that his side must win the Champions League in order to be considered ‘one of the greatest teams’ after being crowned Premier League champions for a third successive season.

Following Manchester City retaining their Premier League title once more, Pep Guardiola has claimed that his side need to win the Champions League in order to be considered ‘one of the greatest teams’.

The Citizens claimed their third successive Premier League title on Saturday afternoon, after Arsenal were defeated by Nottingham Forest.

They kicked off Sunday’s celebration in style too, defeating Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad before lifting the coveted trophy.

Despite the celebrations, City’s job this season isn’t quite done yet. They are on course to win the treble, as they have both an FA Cup final and a Champions League final still to play.

City would become just the second English team in history to claim a treble, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous 1998/99 Manchester United side being the first.

With the prospect of City achieving the same feat looking likely, it has raised questions among fans and pundits as to where this side ranks among the greats.

Speaking to the media following City’s trophy presentation, Guardiola said what needs to be done to be considered ‘one of the greatest teams’.

“To be considered one of the greatest teams, we have to win the Champions League.” the Spaniard said.

“Otherwise, people may say that it wasn’t complete – our time here,

“At the same time, if we can’t do it on the 10th versus Inter, or next season we cannot do it – it is unfair to say that what we have done in winning five Premier League’s in the last six years isn’t something extraordinary.

“Everyone in world football knows it, all the managers in the Premier League, all the players, sporting directors, clubs or whatever – they know how exceptional it is.”
