Gold Tweet Expected To Be Supplemented For Stayers’ Hurdle at 2023 Cheltenham Festival

Gold Tweet become the first French-trained Cheltenham Festival Trials Day winner for 18 years on Saturday after taking the Cleeve Hurdle – which is often a top prep race ahead of the Stayers’ Hurdle on March 16th – but the 6 year-old still needs to be supplemented for the race.

Cleeve Hurdle Winner Gold Tweet Expected to Be Supplemented For Stayers’ Hurdle

We’ve saw 14/1 shot Gold Tweet upset the odds on Cheltenham Trials Day and win the 2023 Cleeve Hurdle – with Dashel Drasher and the three-time winner of the race Paisley Park in behind (watch below).

As a result, with any Cleeve Hurdle winner, all eyes turn to the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, with last Saturday’s race always a stepping-stone event towards Prestbury Park.

However, Gold Tweet didn’t have an entry for the Stayers’ Hurdle prior to that Cleeve Hurdle success, but the ‘good news’ for his connections is that there is still time to get the Gabriel Leenders-trained 6 year-old into the race – albeit at a cost of just over £14,000.

Connections Will Have To Pay £14,787 To Get Gold Tweet Into The Stayers

At this stage there are 28 entries for the 2023 Stayers Hurdle – headed by the Gordon Elliott-trained Teahupoo @ 5/2 with William Hill – but Gold Tweet isn’t one of those.

Connections are, however, making positive sounds that they will stump up the £14,787 to get Gold Tweet into the race after picking up £39,466 for winning Saturday’s Cleeve Hurdle.

Gabriel Leenders told the Racing Post “He will run in March during the festival if all is normal. We were very happy with this wonderful victory at Cheltenham,” he said. “I will discuss plans with his trainer and see if we supplement him for the festival.”

“We’ll see how the horse returns to the stables in France. He is, above all, a steeplechaser and we also have in mind the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. We will study the programme to see what we will run in.”

Cleeve Hurdle a Good Trial For Stayers’ Hurdle

We’ve seen 14 of the last 17 Cleeve Hurdle winners run in the Stayers’ Hurdle, with 12 of those going onto finish in the top 4 and five horses do the double – the last horse to win both races in the same season was Paisley Park in 2019.

Baracouda The Last French-Trained Winner Of The Stayers’ Hurdle

The older racegoers out there will remember another big French name that dominated the Stayers’ Hurdle division back in the early 2000’s. Baracouda, who was ridden by the controversial Thierry Doumen, won the race back-to-back in 2002 and 2003, plus only just failed to land the three-timer when second in 2004 to Iris’s Gift.
