Gareth Southgate has named his 33-man provisional England squad for Euro 2024, with mainstays Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford among the names to have missed out.

Southgate Names 33-Man Provisional Euro 2024 Squad

As we edge ever closer to the start of Euro 2024 next month, England manager Gareth Southgate has named a 33-man provisional squad for the tournament, in which several key figures have been omitted.

Both Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford, who have a combined 141 caps between them, have been left out of the 33-man list, along with fellow notable absentees Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Dominic Solanke, Nick Pope, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, Levi Colwill, and Ben White.

Asked about Rashford’s absence, Southgate commented: “These are, of course, difficult calls. You are talking about players who are very good players. With Marcus, in that area of the pitch, I feel that other players have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that.”

The Three Lions coach followed on by touching on Henderson’s omission: “It’s difficult for me to leave Henderson out of the squad, he’s always been supportive.

“The determining factor was the injury he picked up in the last camp. He’s missed five weeks and hasn’t been able to get to the intensity required since then. He’s a fantastic professional.”

While numerous high-profile figures have missed out, Adam Wharton, Jarell Quansah, and Curtis Jones have been handed their maiden senior call-ups, along with James Trafford and Jarrad Branthwaite, who have previously been called up but are yet to have made their debuts for Southgate’s side.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has retained his place in the squad after making his debut during the last international window, as have Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

The 33-man squad, which will be cut down to 26 on Saturday, 8 June, will meet up on Wednesday, 29 May, ahead of their preparation matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland at St. James’ Park, before heading out to Germany to kickstart their finals campaign against Serbia on Sunday, 16 June.
