Commissioning Gives Robert Havlin First Group One Winner
The powerful John Gosden yard have been a big supporter of Robert Havlin over the years, but mainly to ride their second or third stings, with the likes of Jimmy Fortune and more recently Frankie Dettori getting the leg-up on their big Group One horses.
However, the Gosden camp rewarded Havlin’s loyalty at Newmarket on the opening day of the Future Champions Fixture by booking the older statesman of the weighing room to ride their unbeaten filly Commissioning in the Fillies’ Mile.
Commissioning had been all the rage in the betting before the race and after two smooth wins at Newmarket in July and September it was easy to see why. She was sent off the 8/13 fav on the day for the Fillies’ Mile and looking to give the Gosden yard their sixth win in the Group One.
Hard Work For Commissioning, But Got The Job Done
However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Havlin and Commissioning as the filly looked to be in trouble a few furlongs out and traded much bigger in-running as a result.
The Karl Burke-trained Novakai made a bold bid from the front and looked to have the race won, but Havlin managed to get Commissioning going in the final furlong and her proven track experience paid off by eventually getting to grips with Novakai by a length – the pair pulled 4 3/4 lengths clear of the third Bright Diamond.

Commissioning Cut In Betting For 2023 1,000 Guineas
As a result of Commissioning’s Fillies’ Mile win, the bookmakers reacted by cutting her odds for the 2023 1,000 Guineas next year back at Newmarket to @ 4/1 with 888Sport, but is still just behind the Dermot Weld-trained Tahiyra, who is @ 3/1 with 888Sport.
