Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has revealed that if Barcelona show an interest in Lionel Messi then the Argentinian will be ‘close’ to a return, per Fabrizio Romano.

The PSG forward left Barcelona in 2021, ending a 21-year spell at his boyhood club. The financial issues that the La Liga side were facing caused the Argentina international to leave and start a new adventure in France. However, rumours of a possible return to Spain have started to surface.

Since signing for the Parisian side, Messi has shown his quality on a domestic level. Contributing to 46 goals in 49 league matches, forming a dangerous relationship with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. However, failing to be successful in the Champions League, yet again, has frustrated supporters once more.

Christoph Galtier’s side were knocked out in the round of 16 by Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, after failing to score a goal in either leg. The signing of Messi was made in hopes of more success on the European stage and with that failing to occur, the 35-year-old could be on the move.

Barcelona have had similar luck in European competitions, failing to progress from the group stage of the Champions League. Xavi’s side were then knocked out of the Europa league, after losing to Manchester United across two-legs.

However, the Catalan side are in pole position to win La Liga this season, sitting top of the table with an 11-point lead over Real Madrid. Winning the title would end a five-year drought since their last league trophy and could entice their record goalscorer back to Camp Nou.

Negotiations between the two clubs could face some financial issues, as Barcelona are under investigation which could result in a transfer ban this summer. Spanish midfielder Gavi has allegedly been removed from the first team, due to issues with his current contract- a sign of Barca’s current situation.
