Egypt vs DR Congo Preview & Prediction (20:00 KO)

The Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage is in full swing and to round off Sunday’s action, Egypt and DR Congo go head-to-head in San Pedro for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Both sides finished second in their respective groups with identical records having drawn all three of their fixtures. Egypt played out 2-2 stalemates against Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde, while DR Congo drew 1-1 with Zambia and Morocco, as well as 0-0 with Tanzania in their final group match.

A draw won’t suffice in this one for either side however, and if the winner isn’t decided within regulation time – extra time and penalties will be required to see who advances to the last eight of the competition.

While the Pharaohs are now unbeaten in eight successive matches across all competitions, the Congolese are winless in five, and the pair meet for the first time since facing off at the 2019 edition of the tournament in Egypt.

Mohamed Salah and Ahmed Elmohamady scored the all important goals to secure a 2-0 win for the Egyptians on that day, however Rui Vitoria’s side will be without their talisman for this one as he has returned to Liverpool for treatment on a hamstring injury that he suffered during the group stage.

We at SportsLens anticipate a closely-fought battle at the Laurent Pokou Stadium, but are backing Egypt to narrowly edge the tie to book their spot in the quarter-finals despite being without their star man.

Prediction: Egypt 2-1 DR Congo

Egypt vs DR Congo Betting Tips

  • Over 2.5 Goals @ 15/8
  • Over 3 Cards @ 10/11
  • Combined Bet Builder Odds @ 4.48/1

Egypt vs DR Congo Betting Tip 1: Over 2.5 Goals @ 15/8

Our first tip for your Sunday evening Egypt vs DR Congo Africa Cup of Nations bet builder is to back over 2.5 goals to be scored in the match, priced by leading UK betting sites at 15/8.

Over 2.5 goals have been scored in four of Egypt’s last five competitive matches, including all three of their group stage fixtures. Although none of Congo’s group matches went over 2.5 goals, we expect that they’ll be more of a threat going forward now that Yoane Wissa, Cedrick Bakambu, Gael Kakuta and Silas Mvumpa are all fit to start.

Egypt vs DR Congo Betting Tip 2: Over 3 Cards @ 10/11

With emotions running high as we enter the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations, we expect to see plenty of yellow cards and red cards. This was seen in Angola and Namibia’s last-16 meeting on Saturday evening, where both sides received a red card, and four cards were shown in total.

Priced by leading UK bookmakers at around 10/11, we’ve identified the ‘Over 3 Cards’ selection as a strong one for this tie. Four or more cards were shown on one occasion in Egypt’s group campaign, as well as in one of the Congo’s group matches, in what were fairly tame fixtures.

Tempers will undoubtedly flare with both sides battling it out for a spot in the last eight of the competition, and with talented, tricky attackers such as Wissa, Mvumpa, Bakambu, Mahmoud Trezeguet, Zizo and Mostafa Mohamed all expected to feature – there’ll plenty of opportunity for cards.
