The 2023 Clarence House Chase, which has been rescheduled to run on Saturday’s Cheltenham Trials Day card after Ascot was called off last weekend, was given a boost on Monday with three more horses, that included Editeur Du Gite, supplemented for the race.

2023 Clarence House Entries Up To Six For Saturday’s Cheltenham Race

Saturday’s 2023 Albert Bartlett Clarence House Chase, which is normally staged at Ascot racecourse, was cancelled last weekend due to the frozen Berkshire track, but the good news for horse racing fans is that it was quickly rescheduled and slotted in to the Cheltenham Trials Day on Saturday.

This means the eagerly awaited Clarence House Chase clash – a good guide ahead of the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival – between Energumene and Edwardstone remains on target to happen.

Altior (2019) was the last horse win both races in the same season, while prior to that Sprinter Sacre (2013), Sire de Grugy (2014) and Dodging Bullets (2015) also did the double.

Editeur Du Gite Supplemented For Clarence House Chasea For £2,250

With trainer Gary Moore saying at the weekend that if the race re-opened he love to run his Desert Orchid Chase winner Editeur Du Gite in the Clarence House – saying that Cheltenham would suit his horse much better than Ascot.

Moore’s wish came true with the race welcoming new entries on Monday and at a cost of just £2,250 connections of Editeur Du Gite were allowed to get their improving 9 year-old into Saturday’s Cheltenham race.

With £2,460.24 on offer for the horse that finishes fifth, then if all the six Clarence House Chase runners head to post, this means Editeur Du Gite will only need to beat one home to turn a profit.

However, with £52k on the table to the winner, £19k for second, almost 10k for third and just under 5k for coming fourth, there is every chance Moore and co will be banking a decent profit.

Editeur Du Gite, who is also @ 20/1 for the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday 15th March, will also carry the same colours as Sire Du Grugy, who won the 2014 Clarence House and later followed-up in the Champion Chase a few months later.

The Moore-trained 9 year-old was last seen improving to win the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton on December 27th – beating the useful Nube Negra by 13 lengths after Edwardstone unseated his jockey at the fifth. He’s still rated 10lbs inferior to the King horse and 16lbs lower than Energumene, but certainly looks a big player to land the bronze medal if the main players stand on their feet this time.

Energumene vs Edwardstone Clarence House Chase Matchup Is Still On

The added relief for racing fans and Cheltenham racecourse is that despite the race conditions offering a much lower prize fund we’ll still going to see big-guns Energumene, who was runner-up in this race last year (watch below) and Edwardstone, in the race which sets up a similar Shishkin/Energumene clash that we saw 12 months ago.

The Willie Mullins-trained Energumene won the 2022 Champion Chase and is the odds-on favourite to defend his crown on Wednesday March 15th 2023 @ 8/11 with 888Sport, and is going to be one of the big Cheltenham tips of this coming weekend, with next best in the betting the Alan King-trained Edwardstone @ 5/2.

Therefore, a win for Energumene will further cement his place at the top of the 2023 Queen Mother Champion Chase betting market, while if last year’s Arkle Chase hero Edwardstone can win there is every chance he might overhaul the Mullins horse as favourite for the day two Cheltenham Festival showcase race.

What About The Weather Ahead Of Cheltenham Trials Day?

Cheltenham clerk of the course Jon Pullin hasreported forecast frost overnight on Monday morning and more is expected throughout the week. Temperatures in the evening are, however, expected to rise from -3/-4C on Monday to 0/-1C by Thursday and Friday.

While the daytime temperatures are also set to increase from highs of +3/+4C on Monday to +5/+7C by Saturday which is giving the track officals a lot more hope that Cheltenham Trials Day can escape the recent wave of abandoned UK race meetings.
