Cheltenham Festival Results on Wednesday March 15 2023

1.30: Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle ITV4

1st: Impaire Et Passe (5/2)
2nd Gaelic Warrior (9/2)
3rd Champ Kiely (13/2)

Winning jockey: Paul Townend
Winning trainer: Willie Mullins

Under a patient ride from Paul Townend, Impaire Et Passe was always tracking the leaders – Hermes Allen and Champ Kiely – but in rain-softened ground the Mullins horse powered home turning in. This classy 5 year-old is now unbeaten in four starts and looks set to get to the very top. He was also giving Mullins his sixth win in the last 16 years in the Ballymore and the County Carlow handler also led home a remarkable 1-2-3 in the race.

2.10: Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase ITV1

1st: The Real Whacker (8/1)
2nd: Gerri Colombe (5/4 fav)
3rd: Bronn 50/1)

Winning jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies
Winning trainer: Patrick Neville

Well, if you’ve not yet seen this race – watch it! It was a cracker! Course winner The Real Whacker was always up with the speed and having jumped well found himself still in the lead turning for home. With his challengers falling away it was left to a late surge by the favourite Gerri Colombe to try and run the Neville-trained horse down. Up the hill, the unbeaten Gordon Elliott runner flew home and traded as low as 1.43 in-running. However, he was just denied under jockey Jordan Gainsford by the shortest of margins. Could it be the Gold Cup next year for this pair?

2.50: Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle ITV1

1st: Langer Dan (9/1)
2nd: An Epic Song (16/1)
3rd: Camprond (20/1)
4th: The Goffer (7/1)

Winning jockey: Harry Skelton
Winning trainer: Dan Skelton

Turning for home there was any number of horses involved in winning this, but heading to the last it looked like Aidan Coleman and Camprond would be the one to get the job done. However, the JP McManus-owed hurdler fluffed his lines up the Cheltenham Hill and a storming run from both An Epic Song and the eventual winner Langer Dan got by him. This success was Dan Skelton’s fifth Cheltenham Festival winner.

3.30: Queen Mother Champion Chase ITV1

1st: Energumene (6/5 fav)
2nd: Captain Guinness (12/1)
3rd: Greaneteen (25/1)

Winning jockey: Paul Townend
Winning trainer: Willie Mullins

Energumene joined the likes of Altior, Sprinter Sacre and Master Minded as two-time recent winners of the Champion Chase after a devastating display in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The day’s feature was all set up to be a battle of the ‘E’s’ – with Editeur Du Gite and Edwardstone, but turning for home there was only one ‘E’ to focus on and that was the current champ. The win provided Brighton chairman, Tony Bloom with another Festival win and also gave Mullins his 91st success on the biggest jumps stage.

4.10: Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase ITV1

1st: Delta Work 11/10 (fav)
2nd: Galvin (11/4)
3rd: Franco De Port (9/2)

Winning jockey: Keith Donoghue
Winning trainer: Gordon Elliott

More often than not the cream rises to the top in the Cross Country Chase – since 2014 we’ve had all bar one winner return 7/1 or shorter. That was the case again in 2023 when the first two in the market Delta Work and Galvin pulled well clear of the field to battle this one out. Both were also trained by Gordon Elliott, who has made this race his own in recent years – winning it four times since 2017. However, it was experience over these fences that won the day as Delta Work managed to just ‘out-fox’ his stablemate and in the end won going away.

4.50: Grand Annual Handicap Chase RTV

1st: Maskada (22/1)
2nd: Dinoblue (7/2 fav)
3rd: Global Citizen (12/1)
4th: Third Time Lucki (8/1)

Winning jockey: Darragh O’Keeffe
Winning trainer: Henry De Bromhead

The Grand Annual is always run at a fair pace and that was the case again in 2023. This found some of the runners out and also put more focus on the jumping. Last year’s winner – Global Citizen was looking for a famous festival double and he gave his backers a chance. However, in the end one of the most competitive races at the Festival has so far produced one of the easiest. It was the Henry De Bromhead-trained Maskada that romped away to win by 6 1/2 lengths at the line to give his trainer a first success in this handicap.

5.30: Champion Bumper RTV

1st: A Dream To Share (7/2)
2nd: Fact To File (16/5 fav)
3rd: Captain Teague (40/1)

Winning jockey: Josh Gleeson
Winning trainer: John E Kiely

Owner JP McManus had last won the Champion Bumper back in 1994 with Mucklemeg – but he was putting that right here after 29 years with a 1-2 in the race. A Dream To Share was a horse JP bought recently after he bolted up at Leopardstown and he’s already got some of that money back with a win here. This flat-bred 5 year-old had too much pace for his rivals – even in the softer ground – and it was also a memorable day for young 18 year-old jockey Josh Gleeson, who was having his first Festival ride. Anothter JP runner – Fact to File – took second, with 40/1 shot Captain Teague in third, in what was a rough final race on day two.
