Cheltenham Day Three: Thursday 16th March 2023 – Can Flooring Porter Win a Third Stayers’ Hurdle?

Into Day three of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and we’ve another seven races to look forward too with the Stayers’ Hurdle at 3:30pm the big highlight. We should be in for a cracker too – with the winner of the last two runnings, Flooring Porter, back for more. He’s taking on a lot of fellow top Irish horses this year though, including Blazing Khal and Teahupoo.

We’ve also got the Ryanair Chase at 2:50pm – which is another of the big day three highlights – where all eyes will be on Shiskhin to see if he can give trainer Nicky Henderson a third win in the race.

Cheltenham Festival 1-2-3 Best Bets on Day Three: Thursday 16th March

1.30: Turners Novices’ Chase ITV1

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: It’s hard to get away from the Gordon Elliott-trained Mighty Potter here. A useful hurdler but has turned into a much better chaser – winning all three starts over the bigger obstacles. The last of those was an impressive win in the Ladbroke Novice Chase at Leopardstown – which is the best form in this race. He also beat Bandridge back in December so can uphold that form. The 2012 Supreme winner Appreciate It can take third.

  • MIGHTY POTTER
  • BANBRIDGE
  • APPRECIATE IT

2.10: Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle ITV1

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: This has been a good race for the Gordon Elliott yard – winning 3 of the last 5. He’s got several in the race again and all are respected, including the likely favourite Maxxum. But a chance is taken on their The Bosses Oscar, who could be better value. He was last seen running third at Musselburgh, but that came off a 188-day break. Should, therefore, be better for that run and this consistent 8 year-old will also have the useful Ben Harvey riding to claim a handy 5lbs. Henderson’s Walking On Air is another to note.

  • THE BOSSES OSCAR (e/w)
  • MAXXUM
  • WALKING ON AIR

2.50: Ryanair Chase ITV1

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: If Shishkin puts on the same display as when winning the Ascot Chase last time, he will be hard to beat. This 9 year-old flopped in the Champion Chase last season but has relished the longer trip this term and is still 8-from-10 over fences. With Blue Lord looking vulnerable over the trip last year’s runner-up Janidil can take silver again, with Fury Road best of the rest. Shishkin can give Nicky Henderson his third Ryanair Chase win.

  • SHISHKIN
  • JANIDIL
  • FURY ROAD

3.30: Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle ITV1

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: A decent renewal of the day three feature with a strong Irish challenge on the cards. The winner from the last two years – Flooring Porter – will make a bold bid from the front again, but the younger legs of Blazing Khal get the verdict. This 7 year-old has won all four runs over hurdles and is a 2-time course winner at Cheltenham too. He’s taken to remain unbeaten and give young jockey Philip Byrnes his biggest pay-day yet. The French raider – Gold Tweet, who was supplemented for the race can outrun his odds for third.

  • BLAZING KHAL
  • FLOORING PORTER
  • GOLD TWEET

4.10: Plate Handicap Chase ITV1

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: Tough renewal as always and we’ve last year’s winner – Coole Cody – back for more too at the age of 12. But the Venetia Williams yard have a fair record in this race and so a chance is taken on their Frero Banbou. This 8 year-old get in with just 10st 6lbs to carry and from his 17 runs over fences has only finished out of the first three 4 times. The Nicholls-trained Il Ridoto is a proven CD winner and can go well too, while at a bigger price the Gordon Elliott runner Mars Harper could go well off a light weight.

  • FRERO BANBOU (e/w)
  • IL RIDOTO
  • MARS HARPER

4.50: Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle RTV

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: All eyes will be on the Henderson mare Luccia here – who is yet to lose a race. However, she’s little value in the betting and so the better call could be the Willie Mullins runner Lot Of Joy. Paul Townend rides this 5 year-old and could be anything after an easy 12 length win at Fairyhouse last time. She’s rated 7lbs behind Luccia but does get a handy 5lbs from the favourite. Under Control, another for Henderson can also go well for top owner JP McManus.

  • LOT OF JOY (e/w)
  • LUCCIA
  • UNDER CONTROL

5.30: Kim Muir Challenge Cup RTV

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: This race is often about the best of the amateur jockeys – with Barry O’Neill, Patrick Mullins and Derek O’Connor big names. However, the other top rider in this sphere is Jamie Codd and he rides Dunboyne here for Gordon Elliott. This 8 year-old was a close second to the useful Carefully Selected last time at Gowran Park and has Festival experience when running in the Pertemps last year. Stumptown and Mr Incredible are others with big chances, while we’ve also got last year’s winner in the race – Chambard – if you like that angle.

  • DUNBOYNE
  • STUMPTOWN
  • MR INCREDIBLE
