Possible Willie Mullins Cesarewitch Runners
Willie Mullins is more famed for having winners at the Cheltenham Festival in the UK, but the Irish handler is also no stranger to having runners on the flat in England – especially over the more extreme trips and at the bigger meetings.
Mullins has mopped up many Royal Ascot winners over the years, but he’s also had a habit of targeting this Saturday’s Cesarewitch Handicap with success – winning three of the last 4 renewals. Oh, and he also had the second 12 months ago too (Burning Victory)!
The first Mullins winner in the Cesarewitch was Low Sun in 2018 and then he followed that up with wins in 2019 with Stratum and 2020 with Great White Shark. As mentioned, he was also denied the four-time last year when fellow jumps trainer, Nicky Henderson plotted Buzz to take the prize and in the process beat the Mullins-trained Burning Victory into second.
What Could Mullins Run In The 2022 Cesarewitch?
At this stage, Willie Mullins has three horses entered – GIBRALTAR, SCARAMANGA and BABY ZEUS.
The final runners will be out on Thursday 6th Oct, so the Mullins entries will be confirmed then, but with Jason Watson and Tom Marquand booked already to ride Scaramanga and Baby Zeus you feel these will be heading to Newmarket.
The other possible Mullins runner, GIBRALTAR @ 11/1 with VirginBet is, however, the shortest of the trio in the betting at this stage and could be an interesting runner. He’s won his last two races at Leopardstown and Tramore – both by 2 1/2 lengths.
This 5 year-old has been raised another 7lbs in the ratings, but has been freshened up with a few months off and if getting into the race is likely to have a featherweight – 16 of the last 20 Cesarewitch winners carrired 9-2 or less (more Cesarewitch trends here). While connections are helping the horse further by booking the useful Saffie Osbourne to ride and claim a further 3lbs.
Jason Watson Has Ridden Two Of Willie Mullins’ Cesarewitch Winners
Another Mullins horse that punters could latch onto though is the Jason Watson-ridden SCARAMANGA @ 12/1 with VirginBet . Watson has ridden two of Mullins’ last three Cesarewitch winners, so the fact he’s turning to him again could be significant.
Scaramanga also represents the winning connections of the 2020 winner Great White Shark – being owned by Malcolm Denmark.
The 7 year-old is also having his first run for Mullins having previously been housed with Paul Nicholls, but was also a 50/1 shot for the race 12 months ago when finishing a remote 24th (beaten 57 lengths).
A talented horse on his day, but has lost his way a bit over the last 18 months – maybe a change of stables will spark him back to life, while it’s still interesting that Mullins has booked Watson to ride – ignore at your peril!
William Buick Booked To Ride The Mullins-trained Baby Zeus
The other Mullins runner that has already got a jockey attached to it is BABY ZEUS @ 12/1 with VirginBet . This 5 year-old will have the services of William Buick, who is yet to win this Newmarket handicap.
He’s won two of his 13 starts to date, but the last of those wins now came 9 runs ago, so has been a tad expensive to follow (beaten twice as favourite too). You feel his better form has also been with a bit of cut in the ground, so any of the wet stuff will help his cause.
Jumps Trainers Have A Good Cesarewitch Record
Being run over 2m2f on the flat then it’s no surprise that we tend to get a lot of jumps trainers targeting the race. They’ve simply got a lot more horses that are bred to stay this longer trip and because many have been running more over jumps, they return to the flat on fair handicap marks.
This has been backed-up in recent years with the Willie Mullins Irish yard winning three of the last four runnings, while the powerful Nicky Henderson camp have mopped up three wins over the years, including 12 months ago with Buzz (watch again below).
