Can Dolos Win Saturday Sandown Race For a Fourth Time?

We’ve a decent jumping card at Sandown Park this Saturday, with the Grade One Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase the highlight at 2:20pm, but 35 minutes prior to that contest all eyes will be on the Paul Nicholls-trained DOLOS, who has won the 1:45pm Virgin Bet Handicap Chase a remarkable three times before.

Paul Nicholls-Trained Dolos Has Saturday Sandown Race Named in His Honour

Since 2019, the Sandown Park racegoers have cashed in three times on the Paul Nicholls-trained DOLOS, who has won Saturday’s 1:45pm at the Esher track in 2022, 2020 and 2019 – oh, and the only time during that period (2018) that this Johnny de la Hey-owned chaser didn’t pick up gold, he was still collecting silver!

Therefore, his record in the race over the last four seasons reads 1-1-2-1 and he’s back for more this Saturday as a 10 year-old and to mark his incredible achievement in this handicap chase, the race sponsors Virgin Bet have this year named the contest in his honour – 1.45pm Virgin Bet Dolos Handicap Chase.

Dolos, in Greek mythology, is the ‘spirit of trickery’ and a ‘master of cunning deception’ – and this is exactly what he’s managed to do to the bookmakers in this race over the years – so can he perform one last act of craftiness this Saturday?

Dolos Bids to Win Sandown Race For a Fourth Time

‘Horses for courses’ Dolos first won Saturday’s Sandown horse race in 2019, when he was aged just 6 years-old, and since then has mopped up two more successes and was also runner-up in 2018.

During that four year period, the Paul Nicholls runner has actually only won once more and that came back in 2019 at Kempton – meaning three of his last four career successes have come in Saturday’s event!

Harry Cobden has also ridden Dolos in all his races in this contest and continues his partnership with the horse on Saturday.

12 months ago, he saw off Frero Banbou (who is entered again too) by an easy 4 lengths and despite his top record in the race was allowed to go off at 10/1 in the betting.

He’s unlikely to be that sort of price this Saturday, with the sponsors Virgin Bet having him @ 5/2 (odds are subject to change).
