Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin has opened up on his frustrations after being regularly left out of the team by manager Eddie Howe.

The Frenchman has found himself out of favour under Howe after suffering a long-term injury earlier on this season and was being tipped to leave Newcastle during the January transfer window.

Brazilian midfielder Joelinton has been Howe’s preferred left wing option which led many to believe that Saint-Maximin would be on his way out.

The recent arrival of Anthony Gordon for £45m has added further doubt over the 25-year-old’s future, with teams including AC Milan and Everton showing an interest.

With Newcastle sitting in fourth place and into their first cup final in over 20 years, the winger may be deemed surplus to requirements.

However, Howe has always stated that the winger can have a future for the Toon and believes he is one of the best dribblers in world football.

The winger opened up about his thoughts during the transfer window and how he was aware of the rumours linking him to Champions League clubs.

Saint-Maximin said: “I will be honest, when you are in that situation a lot of teams can see it. A lot of teams see it as an opportunity to come and buy the player. But I am very proud to be here and the most important thing for me is to play.”

However, the forward showed his frustration about being on the bench and how he can still help his side when called upon.

He continued: “I don’t play football to be on the bench. But you know sometimes you have to understand the situation. As I said, when I was in the team they didn’t lose games and I did my job.”
