Blazing Khal Ticks All Our Main Stayers’ Hurdle Trends

Blazing Khal Stayers Hurdle Odds Cheltenham Horse Racing 1

Blazing Khal has been the market leader for the 2023 Stayers’ Hurdle for many months and with ALL of our main 8 stats in his corner, it’s easy to see why.

This Charles Byrnes runner gets the thumbs-up from our hand-picked stats above and with just four career runs over hurdles should have even more to come too. In fact, he’s yet to lose a race over the sticks and in total has won 5 of his 9 career starts.

He’s a horse that’s had his problems though – at the end of 2021 he suffered an injury that put him off the track for 428 days. However, connections took their time with him and this 7 year-old showed he was a good as ever when winning on this return run last month.

That win came at Navan in the Grade Two Boyne Hurdle – winning by 3 lengths. We can expect that run to have also blown away the cobwebs and with two past course and distance wins to his name too we know the Cheltenham track suits. There’s a lot to like.

Teahupoo Has a Lot Going For Him Too

Trainer Gordon Elliott has never won the Stayers’ Hurdle – in fact, of the main Cheltenham races he’s only landed the Gold Cup. But he’s got a fair chance of improving on that here with his prolific hurdler Teahupoo. This 6 year-old has won 8 of his 11 starts over hurdles but weirdly that is the trend that he falls down on.

This is because 17 of the last 26 winners had only won 7 or less times over hurdles. If you can look past this Stayers’ Hurdle trend, then it’s hard to put you off this winning machine going in again.

The Stats Suggest Klassical Dream Has It All to Do

The Willie Mullins yard won this race for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2018. He’s got the 9 year-old Klassical Dream flying his flag this year – a horse who won the Supreme back in 2019.

He was also 5th in this race last year having been sent off favourite, but of the main runners in the race he falls down on the most stats. His age (9) is not ideal – with a massive 91% of the last 33 winners aged between 6-8. While not winning last time out and also not being a second season hurdler are other downfalls.

Past Champions Often Run Well in The Stayers’ Hurdle

FlooringPorter

Flooring Porter has won the last two runnings of the Stayers’ Hurdle. If he can go in again, he’ll join the likes of Big Buck’s and Inglis Drever as 3+ winners of the race in recent years. He likes to front run, so we can expect more of that here and does seem to save his best for Cheltenham.

The negatives though are that he’s not won a race since winning his last year, but in his defence has only raced 3 times. He’s also been beaten twice by Home By The Lee this term too. While he also falls down on the big trend that’s seen 87% of the last 23 winners come here having been 1st or 2nd last time out.

  • Avoid horses that were beaten in the race before
