Epsom Derby Runners 2023: 14 Horses Confirmed For Saturday’s English Classic

The final Epsom Derby runners are confirmed as 14 horses have stood their ground for Saturday’s Betfred sponsored race at 1:30pm.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has won the Derby 8 times, has three of the 14 runners with his main hope looking to be Auguste Rodin. This Deep Impact colt was last seen flopping in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket but many feel the longer trip in the Derby will suit him better now he’s getting older and the bookmakers agree having  him as one of the main players.

Godolphin’s Military Order had been popular in the betting but has been pushed out to second favourite now as the ‘boys in blue’ go in search of their third Derby winner.

We’ll also see popular jockey Frankie Dettori riding in the Derby for the last time as he’ll be retiring at the end of the year – he rides the John Gosden-trained Arrest, who was a tidy winner of the Chester Vase last time out. Dettori has already won the Oaks and Coronation Cup at the meeting and will be looking for a famous Group One treble over the two days.

Passenger was supplemented for a fee of £85,000 by his connections and will need to finish 4th or better to get that outlay back – he represents last year’s winning trainer and jockey Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Kingscote.

Dante Stakes winner The Foxes is also in the race and will be looking to follow last year’s Derby winner Desert Crown, who won both prizes. While Dante runner-up White Birch, plus the Charlie Johnston Dubai Mile and Ed Walker’s Waipiro are other horses with chances to have confirmed their Derby slot for Saturday.

The Main Epsom Derby Runners

See below the key Epsom Derby runners for the Saturday June 3rd race, with the latest odds from the leading horse racing betting sites.

Auguste Rodin @ 7/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 5
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 5 from 5
  • Total Career Winnings: £203,337
  • Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
  • Jockey: Ryan Moore
  • Last Run: Unplaced in 2000 Guineas (Newmarket), 6th May 2023

Michael Tabor silksAuguste Rodin will be looking to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with his nineth Epsom Derby win but will need to bounce back from a poor display in the 2000 Guineas last time first.

This son of Deep Impact trailed in 12th of 14 that day at Newmarket after being sent off the hot 13/8 favourite. However, many feel the step up to 1m4f is what he’s been crying out for and had been the ante-post Derby favourite all winter until that recent flop.

Last year he landed the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster (watch below) and if back in that sort of form would be a huge player here for his much-respected trainer.

His dam’s sire is also Galileo, the 2001 Epsom Derby winner and was also the first success in the race for trainer Aidan O’Brien – can Auguste Rodin follow in his grandfather’s hoofprints?

In recent days the betting public think so, as Auguste Rodin has been backed into the new Epsom Derby favourite.

Military Order @ 9/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 4
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 4 from 4
  • Total Career Winnings: £69,532
  • Trainer: Charlie Appleby
  • Jockey: William Buick
  • Last Run: 1st Lingfield Derby Trial (Lingfield), 13th May 2023

Godolphin first coloursMilitary Order is likely to be the sole Godolphin Epsom Derby runner for 2023 but will come into the race as one of the big fancies after winning Lingfield Derby Trial last time (watch below).

High Rise (1998) and Anthony Van Dyck (2019) were the last two horses to win the Lingfield Derby Trial and the main event.

Has now won three of his 4 career starts and this Frankel colt showed a lot of battling qualities last time at Lingfield on his first try at 1m4f. He stayed well that day and the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin has won the Derby twice in the last 5 years.

William Buick looks set to continue his partnership in the saddle, having ridden the horse in all four career starts. Overall, looks to have a big chance of giving his famous owners another big race success.

Passenger @ 13/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 2
  • Wins: 1
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 1 from 2
  • Total Career Winnings: £26,295
  • Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
  • Jockey: Richard Kingscote
  • Last Run: 3rd Dante Stakes (York), 18th May 2023

Flaxman Stables Ireland silksPassenger was many people’s big eyecatcher in the Dante Stakes at York last time out. The Sir Michael Stoute runner didn’t get the best of runs during the race with last year’s Derby-winning jockey Richard Kingscote admitting it was his fault.

However, this son of Ulysses stayed on well when he got a clear run and in the end wasn’t far away in third (watch below). That effort was also only his second career outing after winning well on debut at Newmarket in April.

Passenger has also now been supplemented for the Derby at a cost of £85,000 and he’ll need to finish fourth or better to get this fee back.

Dante form also often holds up well in the Derby – last year’s winner, Desert Crown, won both races, while Sir Michael Stoute will be eyeing his seventh Epsom winner with Shergar in 1981 the horse that started the ball rolling for the veteran Newmarket handler.

Arrest @ 9/2

  • Age: 3
  • Career Runs: 5
  • Wins: 3
  • Sent Off As Favourite: 4 from 5
  • Total Career Winnings: £129,411
  • Trainer: John and Thady Gosden
  • Last Run: 1st Chester Vase (Chester), 10th May 2023

Juddmonte silksArrest has a big chance of being sent off as the 2023 Epsom Derby favourite – for two reasons. Firstly, he was impressive last time out when winning the Chester Vase by 6 1/2 lengths (watch below). And secondly, a certain Frankie Dettori is set to ride. The ‘Frankie Factor’ always has a big impact in the Epsom Derby with many ‘once-a-year’ punters betting on the race and seeing a familiar face riding.

This Juddmonte-owned 3 year-old is also another Frankel colt, so is related to Military Order and having won 3 of his 5 starts to date hasn’t done much wrong. That last win at Chester was his first try upped in trip, but he saw it out well and having won on quick and soft ground then he’ll also be fine no matter what the weather throws at the Epsom course.

With Frankie winning the Oaks and Coronation Cup already at the meeting, the punters are backing Arrest for the Derby and is going to be the likely betting favourite for the race.

Arrest will be trying to become the first Chester Vase winner to follow-up in the Derby since Ruler Of The World in 2013, while he’ll also be looking to provide trainer John Gosden and Dettori with their third wins each.

Being a son of Frankel and ridden by Dettori it could be a double ‘Frankie’ party here.
