FC Augsburg

The team was founded in 1907 and it was known as BC Augsburg from 1921 through to 1969. It is also the largest football club in Swabian Bavaria, having more than 18,800 members! FC Augsburg was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2011, after spending a lot of time fluctuating between the second and third divisions, and it has remained in the prime football league ever since then. The club’s colours are red, green and white, and this can be seen on the kits.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Employees of the pharmaceutical company Bayer AG founded the team back in 1904, and it originally existed as one of the best-known departments of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen – a sports club featuring members who participated in various sports. The team was first promoted to the Bundesliga in 1979, and it has remained there ever since. It has finished in the runner-up position five times, but never won the league.

Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Mönchengladbach

SC Freiburg is able to trace its origins back to 1904, with two football clubs being set up in the form of Freiburger Fußballverein 04 and FC Schwalbe Freiburg. It was in 1912, after several name changes and adjustments, that both teams merged and have been operating as SC Freiburg ever since.

Hertha BSC

1899 Hoffenheim

1899 hoffenheim logoThis football club bases itself out of Hoffenheim, a village found in the Sinsheim municipality of Baden-Württemburg. As its name suggests, it was founded in 1899, but began life as a gymnastics club. It was only in 1945 that it was reborn in its current state. 1899 Hoffenheim was a fifth division side in 2000, but it swiftly rose to prominence in the German football league system, thanks to the financial backing of Dietmar Hopp. By 2008, Hoffenheim was in the Bundesliga, and it finished in third place in the 2017-18 season, marking its best result yet.

1. FC Köln

FC Köln has won the Bundesliga twice – the first time in 1964 and again in 1978. It also has a team nickname Die Geißböcke, meaning The Billy Goats, and this refers to the club’s mascot – a male goat named Hennes, which can be seen on its logo.

They purchased the playing of fifth-tier side SSV Markranstädt, having the goal to advance the team to the Bundesliga within eight years. RB Leipzig entered the top-tier league in the 2016-17 season.

Union Berlin

This football club is quite a newbie to the Bundesliga, despite it having its origins way back in 1906. It was then that its predecessor FC Olympia Oberschöneweide was founded. Between 2009 and 2019, the team competed in the 2. Bundesliga division, and it was promoted to the premier division after defeating VfB Stuttgart in the relegation play-offs in 2019. For the proceeding season, it became a part of the Bundesliga and has remained within the division since then.

VfL Wolfsburg

Teams Relegated from the Bundesliga in 2022

Because the Bundesliga operates in a similar way to various other football leagues, teams will be relegated from the division at the end of every season. It is the lowest placed teams that suffer this fate, and in the 2021-22 season, two teams were subjected to relegation to the 2. Bundesliga division. Hertha BSC managed to win 2-1 on aggregate against Hamburger SV in the relegation play-offs, meaning that both clubs remainder in their respective leagues as a result.
