Heung-Min Son has scored nine of Tottenham’s 29 goals in the Premier League season but he is now a major doubt for the visit of Newcastle.
Why is Son a big miss?
Spurs have relied on Son to be their talisman upfront since the departure of Harry Kane. Son joined Spurs in 2015 and has scored 154 goals for them in that time.
James Maddison had a great start to the season with Spurs with eight G/A but his injury has ruled him out until the new year.
In three of their last four games, Spurs have only managed to score one goal. Without that attacking threat of Son for the game against Newcastle could result in yet another defeat for Spurs.
Son limped off in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham. In Ange Postecoglou’s press conference today he was asked for an update on the Son injury, he replied: “Nothing new really. The last update I got late last night was that he was a bit sore last night after the game. We’ll have to see today.”
Newcastle’s threat and recent form
Newcastle have scored 32 goals in the Premier League this season, which is the fifth highest. Spurs have leaked 22 goals in compared to the 29 that they have scored.
Newcastle have had injury problems of their own and Eddie Howe’s side are currently out of form because of it. Despite home form still being good with wins against Chelsea and Manchester United, Newcastle have suffered embarrassing away defeats to Bournemouth and Everton on the road.
In fact, Newcastle have only won once on the road all season in an 8-0 hammering over Sheffield United.
Howe has been speaking on the importance of the game; saying it’s come in a season-defining month for his side: “I think it would need a very similar performance to last year, where we were excellent.
“We were at our best defensively, we were at our best in attack as well. That was a memorable day and that gave us a really big lift for what was ahead. It came at a key stage of the season, so we certainly know the importance of this match.
“I think we always say it’s season-defining, whatever period we’re in. Certainly December was always going to be a big month for us with the sheer number of games that we have.
Where can I watch Tottenham V Newcastle?
