Manchester United vs Chelsea Report: McTominay At The Double
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United returned to winning ways against Chelsea on Wednesday night after narrowly losing to Newcastle last time out, and it was their top goalscorer Scott McTominay who provided the all important goals.
The evening started in perfect fashion for the Red Devils under the Old Trafford lights as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Antony in the ninth minute, but club captain Bruno Fernandes’ tame effort was kept out fairly easily by Robert Sanchez.
Thankfully for the home crowd though, they’d only have to wait a further 10 minutes before taking the lead. Alejandro Garnacho found an unlikely figure in the Blues box in Harry Maguire with a cutback, and the central defender’s blocked effort came out to McTominay who battered home the opener on his left peg.
Sanchez was called into action once again 12 minutes later, superbly denying McTominay his second of the night with a double save from point blank range.
Chelsea started growing into the tie by this point, and on the stroke of half time – young Cole Palmer twisted and turned in between the United defenders and rolled an effort into the far corner past Andre Onana to restore the parity.
The second period, like the first, was full of action but it was the hosts who took advantage despite chances for both sides. Garnacho was involved once more down the left hand side, delivering an inch-perfect cross towards the far post where McTominay headed home his second of the evening.
A late push from Chelsea saw a few half chances go in their favour, but they couldn’t convert any of them as United secured a mighty three points in front of a raucous home crowd.
