Roy Keane was not best pleased at Erik Ten Hag’s praise for Bruno Fernandes in his post-match interview.

What did Ten Hag say?

After Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Everton, Ten Hag praised captain Fernandes for giving up the chance to take a penalty that Manchester United were awarded in the second half. He gave it to struggling Marcus Rashford in hope he can regain the form he was showing last season. Ten Hag said: “You can see how great a captain Bruno is. As a team, you need such leadership.”

How did Keane respond?

Keane was apart of the panel on Sky Sports Super Sunday and he responded to Ten Hag’s press conference by saying: “He’s giving toffee out there to Bruno for passing on the ball for the penalty. Absolute bloody rubbish, absolute rubbish coming out with that.”

This ism’t the first time Keane has shown disattisfaction with Fernandes, after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City earlier on in the season, Keane called for the captain’s armband to be taken of Fernandes. He said: “After today, having watched him again, I would definitely take the captaincy off him, 100 per cent.

“I know it’s a big decision, obviously they did change the captaincy with Maguire, Fernandes is not captain material.

“I think he’s a talented player no doubt about it but what I saw today with him again, I know we’ve discussed this many times before, it was at Liverpool last year. His whinging, his moaning, his throwing his arms up in the air constantly, it really isn’t acceptable.

“Fernandes is a brilliant footballer but in terms of captain material, he’s the opposite to what I would want in a captain.”

Manchester United’s form

Since that defeat to Manchester City, United have won their last three games and are currently sixth in the Premier League table; four points behind 4th placed Aston Villa.

However, Keane isn’t too confident United can compete with the top four. He said: “Manchester United are sixth now, if you went back a few years and you were sixth you’d be embarrassed, but obviously they seem happy with sixth.

“They have a long way to go. Manchester United have to be competing with the best teams, that’s including Liverpool, [Manchester] City, Arsenal.

“Obviously you’ve got teams like Spurs, they’re having a decent spell, obviously [Aston] Villa, and of course Newcastle. They go to Newcastle next week, let’s see what Man United turn up because that’s what they’re supposed to do, turn up for big games.”

He added: “It’s not been good enough with the talent they’ve got. Look, they’ve got themselves in a nice position but the reason you’re playing for Manchester United is to compete against the top teams.”
