Just as Chelsea were beginning to build some momentum after a lacklustre start in the league, they’ve been hit with news of a potential points deduction that could disrupt their season.
What could a points deduction do to Chelsea?
If the FA and the Premier League decides to act on the news of Abramovich allegedly making ‘secret payments’, then they could either face a hefty fine of a points deduction.
However, Everton have also been in the news for breaching financial fair play news that could see them be hit with a 12-point deduction.
If Chelsea face a similar punishment right now, then they’d be on four points alongside Burnley in 20th place – five points behind Bournemouth in 17th place.
This would obviously dampen any hope they’d have of qualifying for a European tournament once again. The Blues are currently in 10th place on 16 points after 12 games. Chelsea do have a chance of winning silverware as they are in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup – they will host Newcastle.
Of course, it’s never that quick and easy as we’ve seen with Everton and Manchester City’s allegations. A punishment would be more likely to occur next season for Chelsea.
However, if a punishment were to swiftly happen for Chelsea, then there fixtures leading up to Christmas aren’t particularly favourable.
