Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League round of 16 stand on a knife edge after last night’s 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen. Here’s how United could still qualify with two games remaining:
How does the table currently look?
1st – Bayern Munich – +5 goal difference – 12 points
2nd – Copenhagen – -1 goal difference – 4 points
3rd – Galatasaray – -2 goal difference – 4 points
4th – Manchester United – -2 goal difference – 3 points
How can Manchester United still qualify for the Round of 16?
Manchester United certainly have to win in Istanbul when they face Galatasaray on the 29th November. They’ll be hoping already qualified Bayern Munich can grab a win against Copenhagen. This would then put United in second place with six points, ahead of Copenhagen and Galatasaray in 3rd and 4th who would be on four points.
If Copenhagen and Galatasaray’s match ends in a draw on matchday six then Manchester United will have qualified even if they don’t manage to beat Bayern Munich in the game at Old Trafford. If either Copenhagen or Galatasaray do win then Manchester United would realistically need to beat Bayern Munich. A draw could do the trick depending on their goal difference.
Let’s Galatasaray beat Manchester United on matchday five then that would be the end of the line for them. If that match were to result in a draw and if Bayern Munich beat Copenhagen then United and Copenhagen would both be level on points going into an anxious matchday six.
Manchester United then must beat Bayern Munich in hope that Copenhagen can stop Galatasaray. A draw would be the best outcome in that game for United but if Copenhagen were to beat Galatasaray it would come down to goal difference which Copenhagen currently has the better of.
