Arsenal feel that they were wrongfully denied a penalty in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea and they’re actively trying to get an apology out of PGMOL.
The incident saw Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez clatter into Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus. Referee Chris Kavanagh didn’t deem it worthy of a penalty and the officials in VAR agreed.
However, the incident wasn’t too disamillar from one that happened in the opening weekend of the season in the Man Utd V Wolves game. In a critical period of the match, Man Utd goalkeeper clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic and there was no penalty given.
After the game, head of the PGMOL, Howard Webb, issued an apology: “Onana jumps into the Wolves player. (Sasa) Kalajdzic is just jumping up and not into Onana, so it’s not two players coming together; it’s one player going into the other. In the end, we didn’t recommend a review.
“We should’ve done. We acknowledge that as an error in the opening week, which of course is disappointing. We took the learning from that and (will) obviously try going forward to ensure that type of error doesn’t happen again.”
Should Arsenal receive an apology from PGMOL in what seems to be the exact same mistake as the Onana situation? Why are referees and VAR officials getting this type of decision wrong?
