Pegged by many as this season’s expected ‘overachievers,’ Aston Villa were dealt a harsh reality check at St James’ Park. The hosts will be wanting to cement their Champions League status and they have sent a huge signal of their intentions – we take a look at Newcastle’s top four odds after a mightily impressive performance.
A throbbing Newcastle crowd were treated to the best possible start to the new campaign, as they witnessed their side pick up where they left off from last season’s miracle year.
Summer signings Sandro Tonali – who opened the scoring with a fine sliding volley – and second-half substitute Harvey Barnes registered goals on their Premier League debuts for the Magpies, while Alexander Isak’s growing contribution to the team saw him snatch a brace.
In what many had predicted to be a tight, cagey affair between two of the league’s biggest disruptors, Aston Villa were put to the sword. Newcastle’s game management was near-impeccable after Moussa Diaby levelled the score after 11 minutes – just five minutes later Isak was on hand to restore their lead.
After that, they never looked back, exploiting Villa’s daring high-line on several occasions to give their opponent’s new signing – Pau Torres – a true Premier League baptism of fire.
Although there are three more games left to play in the opening round, is it safe to say the Magpies have looked the most impressive team thus far.
They have quickly dispelled any qualms or doubts over their top four credentials, and Eddie Howe’s men appear primed and ready for another ground-breaking season – should they tap into this kind of form on the regular, of course.
