Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard, and are now confirmed to be in direct talks with the Bundesliga champions.
Benjamin Pavard’s four-year career in Bavaria looks to be nearing its end, with the Frenchman now actively refusing Bayern Munich’s proposal for a contract renewal.
The 2018 World Cup winner’s current deal with Bayern runs out in June 2024, meaning he is likely to be available for a cut-price of around £30m this window.
Although the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool have approached the 27-year-old in the past, it now appears Manchester United are best positioned to lure him away from Germany.
Harry Maguire and Fred have both headed for the exit this week which has freed up around £45m in capital, and United are now ready to attack the market once more.
Erik Ten Hag has eyed further reinforcements in defence following the departure of Maguire, and Benjamin Pavard is chief among their targets.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported just this afternoon that the Red Devils have made an initial approach to begin talks. Although Bayern appears reluctant to sell, the player himself has expressed a desire to ‘try a new chapter’ and head for the exit this summer.
A sextuple winner in 2020, Pavard represents the kind of versatility that Ten Hag has pushed the club to bring in, and managing to secure his signature before the end of the window would signal their fourth elite-level signing this summer.
Bayern will more than likely play hardball in negotiations given his prominent role in the team, but both United and the player himself appear ready for a swift conclusion after positive initial contacts.
