BATH 2.30
MACARONE (system – Havana Grey, 5f, turf)
MACARONE was well beaten at Beverley last time but played up on the way to the start and it’s safe to ignore that effort. His earlier 20-1 Carlisle fourth was a step in the right direction and he might be able to break his duck in a weak contest today, Progeny of his sire Havana Grey do well at the minimum trip on turf, landing 44 of their 208 starts (21.2% strike-rate) for a £32.16 to the usual £1 stake.
YARMOUTH 5.35
FOX MASTER (system – Newmarket July Course ‘flops’)
We’ve had some odd results on Newmarket’s July Course this year and, like Ascot and York, it’s a track where I’m prepared to forgive a poor effort. Since the beginning of June, simply backing any horse who finished fourth worse at Newmarket on its latest start would have found 34 winners from 262 bets (13% strike-rate) for a small profit (+£5.24) to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who started in the top six in the betting at Newmarket were 23 from 139 (16.6%) for a profit of £47.24. FOX MASTER finished last of seven when a 5-1 shot at Newmarket last month but his earlier half-length 11-1 second to The Big Board at Leicester has been well advertised by the winner and quotes of around 20-1 look to be an overreaction to his latest effort.
YARMOUTH 6.10
CLOUD KING (system – Night Of Thunder, early starts, turf)
Progeny of the sire Night Of Thunder do well in their early runs, especially on turf. Backing the debutants or those who’d have one or two previous runs would have found 50 winners from 251 bets (19.9% strike-rate) for a profit of £78.20 to a £1 level stake at SP. Robert Cowell’s CLOUD KING is a big price for her debut but could be worth a small/speculative interest.
