STRATFORD 4.37
VISION DES FLOS has had 19 starts beyond 2m4f and won just one of them, when the 1-4 favourite at Chepstow back in January 2020. Joe Tizzard’s ten-year-old could have done without the recent rain and he’ll likely prove vulnerable at the business end in this 2m6.5f handicap chase. Sell in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market. Fixed odds players might want to side with Laura Morgan’s FIRE AWAY, who tends to come good at about this time of year.
Recommendation: Oppose VISION DES FLOS in Stratford 4.37
DONCASTER 5.50
It usually pays to be ridden patiently over the 1m2f trip at Doncaster and that was certainly the case in division one of this 1m2f apprentices’ handicap last year when Wots The Wifi Code came from midfield to score at 11-1. Last year, division two went to a front-runner but both divisions went to hold-up horses in 2021 and Central City came from off the pace when landing the 2019 renewal (COVID intervened in 2020). This year, division two looks to have plenty of pace angles – notably SIMULATION THEORY and ZOFFANY PORTRAIT and it should be set up for a closer. The obvious alternative is HIGHLIGHTER, who makes his handicap debut with over a trip more in-keeping with his pedigree. The four-year-old caught the eye with good late work into mid-division over 7f at Wolverhampton last month and trainer Gemma Tutty has gone to the trouble of booking the excellent Billy Loughnane. Take a fixed odds price with Spreadex or buy in the 50-25-10 market.
Recommendation: Back HIGHLIGHTER in Doncaster 5.50
DONCASTER 5.20
Division one of the aforementioned (see above) 1m2f apprentices’ handicap could be destined for Mick Appleby, who won one half of this race last year with Sandyman. That one made the running – a rare feat over this trip and track, especially in an apprentices’ handicaps when the jockeys often go off too fast. Appleby has a cracking record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards (95 winners from 529 bets and a profit of over £325 to a £1 level stake at SP) and IVY AVENUE, this year’s representative, makes her stable debut after leaving the care of Warren Greatrex. She showed little over hurdles but did win three turf handicaps over 1m-1m2f for Jim Bolger in Ireland and will relish the very soft ground. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back IVY AVENUE in Doncaster 5.20
