What is the Africa Cup of Nations 2024 ?
The Africa Cup of Nations was first held in 1957, featuring just three participating nations in Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. While South Africa was originally also supposed to be partaking in it, it was disqualified due to the apartheid policies in place. It serves as the main international men’s football competition in Africa, and since 1968, it has been held every two years, moving to odd-numbered years in 2013 so as not to collide with the World Cup. The next event will take place in 2023 and will be held in Ivory Coast.
Since those early years, the competition has expanded greatly, and since 1962, it has been held in two separate phases. These are the qualification phase and the Africa Cup of Nations final tournament. The host country automatically qualifies for the final – the defending champions were also automatically qualified in early editions of the tournament. The qualification stage has evolved fairly dramatically over time, and this is due to the fact that an increasing number of nations have entered the competition throughout the years.
The Africa Cup of Nations qualification stage sees 23 teams advance on to the final, along with the automatically qualifying host nation. The finals see the 24 teams being drawn into six groups of four teams. These teams play a single round robin, and the top two teams in each group and the four best third-placed teams advance to the round of 16 stage. Winners then move on to the quarter finals, with the winners of that stage moving on to the Africa Cup of Nations semi final stage. Following on from this is the final match, which determines the Africa Cup of Nations winners.
Africa Cup of Nations Fixtures, Draws, Groups, Tables and Teams
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is the next edition of the competition to take place, with qualification matches currently being organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Through this, the participating teams of the event, to be held in Ivory Coast, will be decided. It marks the 34th edition of the competition to take place, with 24 teams once again qualifying to participate in the final tournament.
All 54 of the CAF member associations are entered into the competition, with the seeding for such being based on the FIFA World Ranking from December 23, 2021. Those teams ranked from 1st to 42nd receive a bye into the qualifying group stage, with those from 43rd to 54th needing to participate in the preliminary round. The Africa Cup of Nations draw 2022 for the preliminary round occurred on January 21, 2022, in Doula, Cameroon. The teams participating in the preliminary round are Lesotho, Eswatini, Botswana, Gambia, South Sudan, Mauritius, Chad, São Tomé and Príncipe, Djibouti, Somali, Seychelles and Eritrea.
The schedule of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification tournament is as follows:
- March 23-24, 2022 – first leg of Preliminary Round matches
- March 27-29, 2022 – second leg of Preliminary Round matches
- June 1-13, 2022 – Matchday 1 and Matchday 2 of Group Stage
- September 19-27, 2022 – Matchday 3 and Matchday 4 of Group Stage
- March 20-28, 2023 – Matchday 5 and Matchday 6 of Group Stage
The Preliminary Round has, of course, already played out, with the twelve lowest-ranked teams drawn into six ties to be played in home-and-away two-legged format. The six winners advanced on to the group stage to join the other 42 teams which directly entered. Those six teams advancing were Botswana, São Tomé and Príncipe, South Sudan, Lesotho, Eswatini and Gambia.
The Africa Cup of Nations fixtures draw for the group stage took place on April 19, 2022, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 48 teams were drawn into 12 groups of four teams running from Group A to Group L, being drawn from four pots. The Africa Cup of Nations 2023 host, Ivory Coast, will still participate in the qualifiers, despite already being guaranteed a spot in the finals. Kenya and Zimbabwe were also included in the Africa Cup of Nations draw for 2023, even though they had been temporarily suspended by FIFA from all international football activities. On May 23, 2022, CAF announced that they had been disqualified from the Africa Cup of Nations qualification round due to their suspension not being lifted by FIFA.
The first matches of the group stage have already taken place as of June 2022, with the next ones coming in September. For the moment, the Africa Cup of Nations table displays the following teams as in peak position for qualifying within their respective groups – Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau (Group A), Burkina Faso and Cabo Verde (Group B), Cameroon and Burundi (Group C), Ethiopia and Malawi (Group D), Ghana and Angola (Group E), Algeria and Niger (Group F), Mali and Congo (Group G), Ivory Coast and Zambia (Group H), Mauritania and Gabon (Group I), Tunisia and Equatorial Guinea (Group J), Morocco and South Africa (Group K), and Senegal and Mozambique (Group L). Until all group stage matches have been completed though, the only team that has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations final tournament is Ivory Coast by default.
It is prominent to note that the Africa Cup of Nations results from the qualifying stages of the tournament will not see the finals take place so swiftly afterwards. In July of 2022, it was announced that the tournament will be hosted by Ivory Coast in January and February of 2024, rather than the original plan for June and July of 2023. This is due to it being the height of the rainy season in the country at that time, and the CAF said it cannot take the risk to host the tournament then, and it will instead be postponed for several months.
Africa Cup of Nations Odds
Betting on the Africa Cup of Nations winners is a simple process to undertake, as with it being such a prolific tournament within Africa, most sportsbooks offer odds on such. Because the tournament is still so early into its operation, few sports betting sites are providing any kind of odds on the outright winner. This is because the qualification stages of the event are not complete yet, so it is still undetermined which teams within the competition will be participating in the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Therefore, it is not currently possible to provide an insight into any Africa Cup of Nations odds on the event, because sportsbooks won’t provide such this early on. Instead, these will come at a later stage, once the nations competing in the final have been determined. This doesn’t mean that you cannot bet on the matches in the qualification stages, with the next ones due in September of 2022.
How are Africa Cup of Nations odds calculated, though? That may be a question you are asking yourself, because different sportsbooks have slightly different odds on hand for you to benefit from. These betting odds represent the general probability of something happening within a football match. That can be defined with a simple example. Let’s say that you decided to back last year’s Africa Cup of Nations winners, Senegal to win again in the 2023 tournament. A sportsbook is providing odds of 3/1 on this being the case, meaning that for every £1 you place in your wager on that team, you get a reward of £3, should it be a successful wager.
You can calculate the chance that the sportsbook has placed on Senegal winning by using the calculation – 1 / (3+1) = 0.25. Therefore, in the example, Senegal has a 25% chance of winning with this particular sportsbook. You decide to back them for £20 at odds of 3/1, meaning that your potential payout if they do indeed win stands at £60 (£20 x 3).
There is every possibility that Africa Cup of Nations odds will look confusing to you at first, if you’re new to sports betting. Yet they are simple to figure out once you scan through them, and you can utilise the online website known as Oddschecker to help. This brings together many popular sports betting sites, including those within our recommended list, and displays their odds for each participating team on the Africa Cup of Nations table. This way, you can look through them to see which sites have the best odds on offer. Furthermore, you’ll be able to see which teams are the Africa Cup of Nations favourites to win.
Normally, we would provide a look at these sites and the odds they’re providing on the outright winner of the tournament. However, for the time being, the Africa Cup of Nations draw for the 2023 final has not taken place. Until the teams are determined, the odds won’t be laid out by sportsbooks.
Africa Cup of Nations Finals
The finals of this tournament will be determined once the qualification matches have all been played. Senegal are the defending champions, having won the 2021 edition of the competition against Egypt. Bids to host the finals were submitted by multiple African nations, with four bids coming from Uganda, Sudan, Senegal and Cameroon being rejected. The others to be considered came from Egypt, Guinea, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. Originally, the host for the 2023 final was to be Guinea, with Ivory Coast hosting the 2021 edition. Cameroon was determined as the 2019 host, but the CAF stripped it of the right to host the event in 2018. That being said, former CAF President Ahmad Ahmad said that Cameroon had accepted to host the 2021 edition, pushing Ivory Coast back as host of the 2023 edition and Guinea to 2025.
The CAF has established that six stadiums need to be available for the Africa Cup of Nations squads to play in, with two of each featuring minimum capacities of 40,000, 20,000 and 15,000. The renovation and expansion of the existing Stade Félix-Houphouët Boigny and Stade de la Paix in Bouaké have been tendered, while the construction of new stadiums in the cities of Korhogo, San Pedro and Yamoussoukro have also been tendered.
Within those stadiums, the quarter finals, Africa Cup of Nations semi final games, as well as the final will be played. For now, the qualifying games are being played in a home-and-away format. As far as the dates for the final games, these are undecided as of the moment. The only information given by CAF is that the finals will occur in January and February of 2024, rather than June and July of 2023, due to that being the rainy season in Ivory Coast.

Africa Cup of Nations Final 2023 Betting
Once the qualification rounds including all group stages have been completed, then the teams for the Africa Cup of Nations final will be determined. Within this tournament, there will be a final draw, which creates six groups of four teams each, with each one playing a single round robin. Therefore, betting on which teams win each of those matches is possible, as well as the general associated markets with football betting. After this, the Africa Cup of Nations table for the round of 16 will be created from the top two teams in each group and four best third-placed teams.
You can continue placing wagers on the teams that will win their respective matches and come out on top, as well as which teams you believe will advance on to the quarter finals and the semi finals afterwards. The losers of the semi finals play against one another in the third place play-off, while the winners advance on to the final match. Throughout the finals, you are able to place outright bets on which team you believe will win the whole competition as well. Once odds for this are released, you can set about wagering on it. You can even bet on the Africa Cup of Nations top scorers and other interesting markets, if you like.
Top Africa Cup of Nations Betting Tips
If you do intend to get involved in betting on the Africa Cup of Nations, then you may want to follow a bit of brief guidance on how to do so. In essence, we recommend following some of these simple tips to having a successful betting experience.
Set Aside a Specific Bankroll for Betting
You always need to ensure that you aren’t betting with more than you can afford to lose when it comes to any kind of football betting or sports betting in general. Therefore, we always recommend setting aside a specific amount of money for engaging in sports wagering with. The number one tip is to stick to that amount. Don’t go beyond it because you could end up spending more than you have available.
Shop Around for an Ideal Sportsbook
One of the primary reasons we wanted to provide this guide to you on the Africa Cup of Nations format and best location for betting on games is so that you can find a perfect platform. This is why it is important to shop around for the best sportsbook that is available to you. Different players like different experiences, so take a look at what each of the recommended sites is offering and then proceed with signing up to the one that you think will provide the most benefit to you and your preferences for betting.
Be Selective with Your Bets
It is especially important that you don’t go around placing bets on everything. You need to be a lot more selective – even more so if you’re new to the sports betting scene. It’s not going to do you much good if you wager on masses of markets and don’t know where you are with them. It’s all about the quality of your wagers, not the quantity. Try placing a smaller number of bets that have been thoroughly researched, instead of simply slapping a bet on this market and that market at random.
Watch the Games
It is ideal to watch the games and see how they unfold. You’ll get more of an insight into their operation, and this is after all the Africa Cup of Nations. Different areas play football slightly differently and if you haven’t wagered on such an event before, then spectating some matches is a perfect way to get used to it. Even if the sportsbooks that you join aren’t offering live streaming, then you can always tune in via your television.
Analyse Your Activity
We always highly recommend keeping a record of your betting activity. This means recording when you place a bet, how much that wager is, what you’re wagering on, if it’s a winner or a loser, how much you have won from it if so, and so on. You can then look back over your activity, analyse when you have won and lost, and try to make changes to your strategy so as to benefit future wagering.
Popular Africa Cup of Nations Betting Markets
There are various betting markets that you can get involved in as a sports bettor when it comes to the tournament. It’s not all about backing the Africa Cup of Nations favourites and running with it. Knowing about the different markets is a good place to start with everything, which is why we have put together an insight into the most popular ones on hand.
Outright Winner
Betting on the outright winner of the Africa Cup of Nations is something that many bettors will get involved in. This is because it takes the 24 teams partaking in the finals, lists them and their odds, and you simply back which of them you believe will win the whole competition. It’s really that simple, and outright winner betting is something you can get involved in for several weeks into the competition, too.
If this is something that you think you’d like to bet on, then we recommend playing at William Hill. It’s frequently one of the best for providing odds on such swiftly.
Match Winner
There are many matches played within the Africa Cups of Nations tournament. These feature different African teams, and you have the chance to wager on which team you believe will be the winner of each of these matches. This is another popular market because it doesn’t take much to understand what you’re betting on and locate odds for it.
Some of the best match winner odds can be found at the Paddy Power online sportsbook. Football is one of the site’s specialities.
Correct Score
There is always the opportunity to bet on the correct score of any football match. Numerous options will be given in this market, so the odds can provide great rewards if you get your prediction correct. As its name suggests, you simply need to back which of the final scores you believe will be the correct one and you’re a winner with this market.
While it is one of the riskier markets to get involved in, it can provide exciting outcomes. Try your hand at it on the Coral website.
Both Teams to Score
If you think both teams engaging in a match will score at least one goal, then you would do well to back them for it. The Both Teams to Score market is a highly popular one for many bettors, because if you simply look at the track record for how frequently teams score in matches, then you can get a good idea of if two teams involved in a match will succeed in doing so.
Both Teams to Score betting is available at all of our recommended online sportsbooks. But why not check it out at Betway, where there are fantastic odds on offer?
Over/Under
If you don’t want to be so specific with the number of goals scored in a football match, then you can always make use of the Over/Under market instead. This way, you don’t have to determine a specific number of goals, and instead can predict that there will be 1.5 goals or more scored, or 2.5 goals or under scored, for example. These markets can also provide some nice payouts, but it’s ideal to know about the teams involved in the match before wagering on it.
We recommend enjoying the Over/Under markets at the Ladbrokes website. It’s one of the best sportsbooks for a reason!
Double Chance
Not everybody is so dedicated to backing a specific team in a match. There may be some hesitation on if that will indeed be the outcome, and in this instance, a popular market is the Double Chance option. This gives you the opportunity to back two different outcomes – either a Home Win and Draw, an Away Win and Draw, or a Home Win or Away Win. The odds are understandably lower for backing two potential outcomes, but it can provide a small profit if you are successful with such a bet.
If you want to minimise the risk on your bets, then you can go ahead and utilise the Double chance market. Check it out at the Betfred platform.
Draw No Bet
This has a similar impact to the Double Chance market, but also incorporates elements of the standard Match Winner option. You simply back either the home team or the away team in this instance. If your backed team win, then you receive a payout as normal. Should a draw result happen instead though, then you receive your stake back. It’s sort of like an insurance market, covering you if a draw outcome occurs.
Take a shot at the Draw No Bet market provided via the BetVictor sports betting site. You may find yourself enjoying the minimalised risk.
Africa Cup of Nations Top Scorers
There are always top goal scorers noted in every big competition, and they often stand out as players that other teams may want to purchase in the near future. In any event, you have the opportunity to bet on which player(s) you think will score the most goals, either throughout the entire tournament, or within a specific match. Obviously, many names will be lobbied about as top goal scorer, making this market a bit riskier to get involved in.
Even though this is the case, betting on the top goal scorer(s) can be enjoyable. Try it for yourself at the BoyleSports platform.
First Team to Score
Every single Africa Cup of Nations match will come with a first to score market. And if you think you know which of the two teams partaking in a match will be the first to secure a goal, then you can back them easily. This First Team to Score market is the way to go, and it’s even better if you know the general goal scoring activity of a team prior to backing them.
The Bet365 sportsbook has great First Team to Score odds that you can benefit from. Why not sign up to the site and engage in such?
Asian Handicap
Those players with a bit more experience in football betting may want to get involved in Asian Handicap betting. Through this market, several goals will be added to the final score, ensuring that the two teams are brought on a more even footing. This way, you won’t really be able to see the Africa Cup of Nations favourites. It’s an ideal market to get involved in if you know a specific team is particularly better than the other, because the underdog team gets something like a two-goal advantage over its opponent, evening things out.
You can find Asian Handicap betting on Africa Cup of Nations games at 888 Sport. It’s a thoroughly exciting betting market.
Africa Cup of Nations Betting Offers
For the time being, the Africa Cup of Nations remains in its qualifying stages. Therefore, you won’t be able to find any specific offers that relate to the competition. Some sportsbooks may bring these offers into play once the finals have been decided upon and the 24 included teams are known. That being said, you will find that there are some standard football betting offers that you can use when wagering on the event.
William Hill – Free or 4
Accumulators are enjoyable bets to place, and if you are able to correctly predict the outcome of six games where exactly three or four goals are scored altogether, then you’ll win big with the Free or 4 at William Hill. Get all six matches correct and you’ll receive free bets worth £200, split up into batches of £25 each. Five of them being guessed correct will grant you a £5 free bet, while four of them presents a £1 free bet reward.
Betfred – Get £30 in Free Bets When You Stake £10
Available to Betfred newcomers, if you deposit and place a £10 bet on sports within seven days of signing up, then you can benefit from this promotion. Bets must be placed at evens (2.0) or more and this will result in you receiving £30 in free bets for the sportsbook within 10 hours of it settling.
BetVictor – Bet £10 and get £40
If you sign up and place a bet of at least £10 on odds of evens or more, then you will receive 3 x £10 sportsbook bets. You’ll also get £10 as a slot bonus for the casino section. This must take place within seven days of your registering for an account.

Two others that offer live streaming of the matches are Bet365 and William Hill. It is normally the case that you will need to have a funded sports betting account at these sites before live streaming is made available. Alternatively, if you have placed a wager within the past 24 hours, then this usually qualifies you to watch the games, too.
