Transfer deadline day has finally arrived, with the media awash with stories of leading Premier League clubs scrambling around to complete deals before today’s cut-off.

The European press is dominated with David De Gea’s potential move from Manchester United to Real Madrid this morning, with the Spaniard’s dream switch reportedly having fallen through.

With La Liga’s deadline of midnight on Monday different to the UK’s Tuesday cut-off, accusations of the English club sending a vital fax through to the Madrid side too late have led to controversy.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are believed to have made a last-gasp attempt to sign a central midfielder and world-class striker.

Distraught De Gea set to stay in Manchester after deal collapses

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea looks set for an Old Trafford stay, after a last-gasp move from the Red Devils to Spanish giants Real Madrid fell through at the 11th hour.

According to The Guardian, a £29.3 million deal that would see Keylor Navas go the other way had been agreed between the Champions League teams.

David De GeaHowever, with the terms of De Gea’s move to the Santiago Bernabeu more pressing due to La Liga’s midnight cut-off last night, the conclusion of the deal did not happen in time.

The Spanish press have accused United of sending through a vital fax to Madrid with only one minute of the window remaining, with the 11.59pm information not lodged with the Spanish LFP in time.

As such, despite Rafa Benitez’s men being set to apply for a potential extension to see the switch still happen, initial reports are that De Gea will not be moving to the Spanish capital this summer.

The report claims that the former Atletico Madrid man is distraught by the failure to conclude his dream switch, while United are also denying claims that they intentionally delayed sending the vital documentation in a bid to sabotage the deal.

Although at the time of writing it remains to be seen how the potential deal will play out, if the Spanish goalkeeper’s move to Madrid has been scuppered it will surely sully the relationship between the teams.

With Sergio Romero not covering himself in glory in United’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea at the weekend, it remains to be seen if De Gea could well be reintroduced to the Red Devils fold by Louis van Gaal if his exit has now been blocked.

Arsenal make a late move for Cavani, Rabiot

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will add any new players to their squad, with The Daily Mail claiming that the Gunners have made a dramatic attempt to sign Paris Saint-Germain duo Edinson Cavani and Adrien Rabiot before the window closes.

The North London side have only added Petr Cech to their first-team squad this summer, with the Emirates Stadium faithful crying out for Arsene Wenger to splash the cash.

Edinson CavaniAlthough the French manager admitted recently that Arsenal would make a move if the right players became available, it was looking like a quiet conclusion to the window for Wenger’s men.

However, the latest report suggests that negotiations between the London side and PSG were ongoing on Monday over a potential double deal.

Cavani has been linked with a Parc des Princes exit for some time, with the Uruguayan playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Ligue 1 champions’ attack.

With the signing of Angel Di Maria bolstering Laurent Blanc’s wide options, Cavani has major competition for a starting role at PSG.

Rabiot is a supremely talented central midfielder but has not been afforded the amount of regular first-team football in the French capital that he would desire.

Arsenal are said to have been scouting the young star extensively and the report suggests Wenger wants to secure a deal for him today.
