Transfer Rumors (15 July 09): Adebayor’s Man City move stalls over demands, Aston Villa close on Boro’s Downing, Rangers’ Ferguson set for Birmingham move, and more

It looked like it was going to be easy breezy for Emmanuel Adebayor’s move from Arsenal to Manchester City, but alas, a smooth, quick resolution does not appear to be in the offing, for one reason or another.

It might take a little longer than expected to add him to our summer transfer lists, but it does look like another transfer gossip favorite will be on the move soon, with Stewart Downing finally set to end his time at Middlesbrough in favor of a quick return to the Premier League and a taste of Europe.

There are a few leagues not currently part of our compilation of lists, but if you’re interested in helping compile transfers for one of those leagues, don’t hesitate to make your interest known, whether through the comment form or through e-mail.

Adebayor’s City Deal In Doubt?

Negotiations between Emmanuel Adebayor and Manchester City have reportedly stalled due to City’s unwillingness to pay the Arsenal striker the £170k per week that he’s reportedly looking for. As a result, Adebayor’s representatives have reportedly attempted to offer him to Manchester United. City had already agreed a £25m fee with Arsenal, and Adebayor had already been granted a work permit, but these latest developments have thrown a wrench into the deal. (Daily Mail)

There are also reports coming out this morning that Adebayor reportedly wants more time to make his decision about moving to City. (The Sun)

Analysis: Frankly, even if he doesn’t get £170k per week, he’s still going to wind up making a lot more than he made at Arsenal (and a lot more than what many likely think he deserves). I can’t say I see him going anywhere other than City, though. A last-minute push by AC Milan isn’t out of the question, but they may not elect to seize the opportunity thanks to his wage demands and the price tag to land him.

Downing Set For Villa

Middlesbrough have accepted Aston Villa’s £12m bid for midfielder Stewart Downing. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: £12m on someone who won’t play until at least October might appear to be a risky investment, but Villa know they’re getting someone who’s already a proven talent in the Premier League and still has age very much on his side. But the big winner in this deal has to be Adam Johnson, who’ll finally get his full opportunity to shine and show all of that potential he has.

Blackburn Bid For Zigic

Blackburn are set to make a £6m bid for Valencia striker Nikola Zigic. (The Mirror)

Analysis: As comes another transfer window, so too comes the rumors of Zigic moving to the Premier League. It’s about time Blackburn put their transfer kitty to use, and Zigic’s track record shows what he’s capable of doing. Of course, I won’t be surprised if these rumors come and go without an actual deal happening.

Wigan Land Scotland

Wigan have signed Swansea City striker Jason Scotland. The 30-year-old Trinidad & Tobago international must still gain a visa and international clearance to fully wrap up a deal worth in excess of £2m, but he has already passed his medical and penned a two-year deal. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Wigan haven’t had a prolific scorer since they made the jump to the Premier League (wasn’t that what they thought they were getting in Amr Zaki?), but if Scotland can keep up the form he’s had with St. Johnstone and Swansea the last few years, then he might be that guy.

Hull Agree Zamora Fee

Fulham have accepted Hull City’s £5m bid for striker Bobby Zamora. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Time is running out with their pursuit of Peter Crouch, with him looking set for Sunderland, but they can put that £5m to good use in getting a new striker.

Birmingham Close On Ferguson

Birmingham City have had a bid of around £1m accepted for former Rangers and Scotland captain Barry Ferguson. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Certainly a can’t-miss opportunity for Ferguson, and taking advantage of it could well see him earn his place back in the Scotland side, and at the very least, prove that he’s still got the goods to compete at the highest of levels.

Spain

Barcelona Move For Maxwell

Barcelona have agreed a €4.5m fee with Inter Milan for Brazilian defender Maxwell. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Maxwell will be a good fit in Barcelona’s side, thanks to his ability to get forward and get involved in attack, and his versatility as both a left back and a winger will be an asset, especially in case injury problems creep up.

Italy

Juventus Sign Melo

Juventus have completed the signing of Fiorentina midfielder Felipe Melo for €20.5m. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: In the end, it took a little longer than expected to iron it all out, but it ended with the expected resolution.

Genoa Close On Palacio

Boca Juniors have accepted a bid in the region of €3m from Genoa for forward Rodrigo Palacio. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Genoa certainly won’t be starved for forward options next season, and as good as they were last season with Diego Milito leading the way, they’ve put themselves in position to be even better next season, even without their biggest scorer.

Portugal

Porto Move For Falcao

Porto have signed River Plate striker Radamel Falcao, purchasing 60% of the player’s rights for a fee of €3.9m. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Recent forward imports from the Argentine top flight have worked out pretty well for Porto (Lisandro Lopez and Ernesto Farias were their top two scorers in the league last season), so they won’t be expecting anything otherwise with Falcao.

Holland

Twente Snag Ruiz And Parker

FC Twente have signed Costa Rican attacker Bryan Ruiz from Belgian side KAA Gent for €5m. (Goal.com)

Twente have also landed South African forward Bernard Parker in a deal worth around €1m. (Goal.com)

Analysis: It’s going to be hard to replace two top young talents in Eljero Elia (signed for Hamburg SV) and Marko Arnautovic (should sign for Inter soon), but Steve McClaren gets two quality young reinforcements in Ruiz and Parker, who are both 23 and have already accumulated a solid amount of caps for their respective countries.
