There are still a few long-running transfer sagas yet to be resolved, but one of them could be within the next few days, and that’s the headline that kicks off today’s transfer roundup.
Reports are rampant that Manchester United will sign Dimitar Berbatov in a £28m deal by the end of this week.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Just in time for the start of the season, all the better due to the uncertainty about whether Rooney will be fit. But, until Berbatov actually stands beside SAF, holding up his new United shirt, or official statements come from either club, then it’s still a ‘wait and see’ thing.
Following up on the bit about David Silva in yesterday’s transfer roundup, the Daily Mail, one of several that is reporting Berbatov’s imminent signing with United, says that United are likely to make an improved offer over the one that was rejected by Valencia last week.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Their attempts to get him might be pretty fruitless, since he seems inclined to stay in Spain, but persistence pays off sometimes.
Chelsea are going to up their bid for Real Madrid’s Robinho to £25m. That bid is more than £5m higher than the initial £19.7m bid that they made last week, which Real rejected.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Real may try to hold out for up to £30m, or keep begging Robinho to sign a new deal, but he should be a Chelsea man before long.
Tottenham have wrapped up a deal for Real Zaragoza keeper Cesar Sanchez. The 36-year old will back up new #1 Gomes.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Juande Ramos shouldn’t feel too worried in case he has to turn to Cesar for an extended spell, as he’s got plenty of experience, dating back to before I even knew a thing about football, including a stint where he was first choice at Real Madrid ahead of Iker Casillas at one point.
Middlesbrough have made an offer for Arsenal defender Justin Hoyte. The amount of the offer is unknown, but club owner Steve Gibson confirmed that an offer has been made and that they’re now waiting for a response from Arsenal.
Rumor Rating: 4 – It’s pretty imperative that they can get a deal for Hoyte done this week, given the hole left by Luke Young’s sale to Aston Villa and how close it’s come to the start of the season.
Hull, still looking and looking for a new striker, are reportedly closing in on a loan deal for Wigan’s Marlon King.
Rumor Rating: 5 – It looked like King may not be headed to Hull after things seemed to stall on that front, but now, instead of a permanent £3m deal that seemed to be in the cards before, it’ll be a loan deal with a view to a permanent move.
Juventus are reportedly interested in Monaco striker Frederic Nimani. The 19-year old scored his side’s only goal in a 1-0 win over PSG in their Ligue 1 opener last weekend.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Nimani is referred to as the ‘new Emmanuel Adebayor,’ which is a good thing, I think.
Sampdoria have completed the signing of Argentine defender Jonathan Bottinelli from San Lorenzo.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Sampdoria have had a pretty productive summer in the market, signing Antonio Cassano permanently, picking up one of Italy’s most promising prospects in midfielder Daniele Dessena, and now picking up another promising prospect in Bottinelli.
VfL Wolfsburg have suffered a big blow ahead of the new season, as Marcelinho has decided to terminate his contract at the club in order to get a move back to his native Brazil with Flamengo.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The 33-year old playmaker was a key part of Wolfsburg’s fifth-place finish last season, scoring seven league goals and chipping in with several more assists.
PSG’s hopes of signing Fenerbahce striker Mateja Kezman seem to be fading, as the two clubs have failed to come to an agreement as of yet, according to the player himself.
Rumor Rating: 3 – If they can’t strike a deal for Kezman, then Lyon’s Milan Baros could emerge as the next best option.
Rangers could be set for another move for Cardiff defender Glenn Loovens. The 24-year old Dutchman was the subject of failed interest from Rangers earlier in the summer, as the club didn’t want to pay more than £2m for him at the time.
Rumor Rating: 5 – With Rangers having more than enough funds in the kitty now that Carlos Cuellar has moved to Aston Villa, Loovens should be on his way to Glasgow soon.
