We’re into a new week, and the Olympics are just a few days away. While they’ll certainly be taking plenty of headlines, there’s going to be a lot going on in transfer-related news, and you know that’s what I’m here for.
What’s going in the transfer world today? Well, you’ll find out right now.
According to reports, the only four clubs that Samuel Eto’o would be interested in joining are Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter, or AC Milan.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Manchester United doesn’t seem a likely option, though he’d come a lot cheaper than Berbatov. Inter don’t seem like a realistic option either, so that leaves Chelsea and AC Milan. Considering that AC Milan may not want to pay what Barcelona are looking for, that leaves Chelsea, who a) can afford him, and b) could be looking for that big name to add to their front line.
Brazilian pub ‘O Dia’ is saying that the original Ronaldo has agreed to sign for an English club. Who could that English club be? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Ronaldo isn’t exactly in the best shape of his life, he’s injury-prone, and he’s 31, but if he’s upright and hitting the treadmill, he’s still got some goals left in him.
Rumor Rating: 3 – [Insert Tottenham striker comment here]. There was a time, not so long ago, that this kind of news would be extremely exciting. To a certain degree, it still is, because I’ve always wanted to see Ronaldo play in England, and because Ronaldo is still Ronaldo, even if he’s the ‘other’ one to some now. However, I want to see goal-getter Ronaldo, not out-of-shape and underperforming Ronaldo.
In news that’s just a little funny, but not so much, Tottenham could be making an £18m move for former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan, who contrary to how it appeared for a good bit of his time at United, can bag quite a few goals. Since smartly leaving Manchester in 2005, Forlan has bagged more than 80 goals in four seasons in Spain.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Atletico may not be interested in breaking up their partnership of Forlan and Sergio Aguero, especially for almost the same amount as they paid for him last summer. Then again, he is 29, so maybe they’ll take the money and go for someone younger.
News of the World says that Manchester City are set to offer Blackburn £12m for Roque Santa Cruz.
Rumor Rating: 3 – That number would appear to be a little short of Blackburn’s reported £15m valuation of Santa Cruz, and besides that, with the season so close to starting, Blackburn may not want to let any more key players go.
The Sun says that Portsmouth are set to make a double defensive swoop, signing Tottenham’s Younes Kaboul for £5m and Reading’s Nicky Shorey for an initial fee of £3.5m (rising to £5m with add-ons).
Rumor Rating: 5 – Does focusing on defensive additions mean their pursuit of Shaun Wright-Phillips is done?
At the same time, David Nugent appears to be against a £5m move to Ipswich, as he doesn’t want to drop back down to the Championship.
Rumor Rating: 3 – David, David, David. Here’s the thing – it’s nice that you want to prove you can bang ’em in with the big boys, but saying and doing are two different things. If you can do it, then good, but if not, you’ll be going to the Championship, whether you like it or not.
After issues about an old knee cropped up on Andy Johnson’s medical, Fulham have decided to slash their offer to Everton for the striker to £8m, much less than the original £13m they were slated to pay.
Rumor Rating: 5 – There’s a small chance that this could revive interest from the likes of Sunderland or Wigan, but Everton are up against a bit of a wall with Fulham, since the longer it takes to get the deal done, the longer it’ll take for the Toffees to make a couple of moves of their own in the transfer market.
Sunderland could be set to make a bid of £5m plus add-ons for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans. The 20-year old Northern Ireland international has spent two loan spells at Sunderland in the last two seasons, and with Roy Keane having missed out on Younes Kaboul, he’s looking towards his former club for a big defensive reinforcement.
Rumor Rating: 3 – It’s a pretty good offer, but Manchester United may want to hold onto someone who still has a great chance to be a key part of their defense in the near future.
Another Manchester United defender who has spent a loan spell at Sunderland could be on his way to Aston Villa on loan for the upcoming season. Martin O’Neill is battling it out with Blackburn and Manchester City for the services of Danny Simpson, as the 21-year old is set to be sent out on loan yet again after going out to Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, and Ipswich the last few seasons.
Rumor Rating; 5 – Simpson likely doesn’t really figure into United’s plans much this season, so a move to Villa, where he could potentially get regular first-team football, would be good for him.
AC Milan have completed a deal to sign Santos goalkeeper Felipe Garcia dos Prazeres.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Felipe is one for the future, certainly. There’s a good chance he’ll be loaned right back to Santos to gain some more experience before jumping into the mix to replace compatriot Dida.
Roma are interested in Chelsea’s Florent Malouda.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Chelsea likely aren’t going to part with Malouda just yet, but the right offer could persuade them to sell. Luiz Felipe Scolari seems intent on giving him a chance to really prove himself, so we’ll see what happens.
Napoli are interested in Zenit St. Petersburg left-back Radek Sirl, and could make an offer of upwards of €3m to snap up the 27-year old Czech.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Sirl can also play on the left side of midfield, so that versatility would be helpful to Napoli.
Werder Bremen have agreed a deal with Galatasaray to send Turkey U-21 defender Alparslan Erdem to Turkey for an undisclosed fee.
Rumor Rating: 5 – He may have had a chance to break into the first team at Werder this season, but with competition for places tight and a chance to make a return to his homeland with the reigning Turkish champions and to join a budding contingent of young Turkish talents, it’s too good of an opportunity to pass up.
Celtic are closing in on a deal for Barcelona midfielder Marc Crosas. There’s still several loose ends to tie up, but a deal is pretty imminent for the 20-year old.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Crosas only got a few games for Barca’s first team, but he does have a great deal of potential, so at a likely fee of £2m, it could be a bargain buy for Celtic.
Well, that’s it for today in transfer news and rumors. I’ll be back tomorrow, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s tidbits, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and see you tomorrow.
