Today’s transfer roundup is pretty light, so you don’t have to worry about your lunch getting cold while you read.
Wigan have made a couple of signings to help bolster their survival hopes, bringing in former Tottenham defender Erik Edman from Rennes on a 500,000 pound deal, and Honduran defender Maynor Figueroa from Olimpia.
Steve Bruce’s former club, Birmingham, is pretty busy themselves, and are closing in on three key signings. Highly-rated Argentine striker Mauro Zarate is on the verge of making a move to England from Qatari side Al-Sadd on a loan deal until the end of the season. The 20-year old Zarate was the hero of Argentina’s U-20 World Cup-winning squad last year, as he scored the late winner in a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the final.
Alex McLeish is also close to adding Hibs defender David Murphy, as the two clubs were able to agree a fee after Birmingham’s initial bid was turned down. Murphy has already agreed a three and a half year deal with a two-year option, and will have a medical today to put the final touches on the move.
And, it looks like McLeish will finally land his biggest target as well, as Everton looks willing to part with James McFadden for 5 million pounds, and Birmingham seems willing to pay it up, after putting in bids of 2.5 and 3 million. Looks like the third time was the charm, eh?
Poor Inter. They’re running away with another Scudetto, they’re in the Champions League round of 16, and they’re miles ahead of their archrivals. But, they seem to be suffering from a case of Pato envy, not only because they missed out on the Brazilian wonderkid, but because hey, he’s already kicking some serious ass in Milan.
So, Massimo Moratti’s looking for Inter’s answer to Alexandre the Great, as he’s sent scouts to the Sao Paulo youth tournament, and there’s a quartet of prospects on Inter’s list: Corinthians attacker Lulinha, Vasco da Gama’s Alex Texeira, Pato’s former Internacional teammate Tales, and Santos striker Alemao.
Now, to the final run-through: Manchester City target Mancini is close to signing a new deal at Roma, and Manchester City may or may not have a chance with 12 or 16 million pound Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski…Fulham are targeting Korean striker Cho Jae-Jin, who Newcastle and Portsmouth passed on recently…Atletico Madrid are set to make a bid for Liverpool’s Momo Sissoko, likely in the range of 13 to 15 million euros…Barcelona have signed goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto from Celta Vigo to backup Victor Valdes…Hamburg SV have signed 20-year old Belarusian midfielder Anton Putsilo from Dinamo Minsk on loan until the end of the season.
