Sunderland set to loan Manchester United strike starlet Welbeck

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are set to loan strike starlet Danny Welbeck to Sunderland for the season.

Last season, the 19-year-old spent a stint on loan at Preston North End, and he scored two goals in eight starts for the Championship side. Now, along with fellow highly-rated United prospect Tom Cleverley, who’s going on loan to Wigan, Welbeck is getting an opportunity to earn regular first-team Premier League experience.

Welbeck’s move will not only aid his development, but it will also put pressure on Kenwyne Jones and former United prospect Fraizer Campbell and breathe some life into a Sunderland attack that was Darren Bent and not much else last season. Last season, Sunderland scored 48 Premier League goals, and exactly half of them were scored by Bent, with Jones netting only nine times and Campbell four.

Welbeck has 15 starts and 24 total appearances for United over the last two seasons, featuring prominently in their domestic cup campaigns, and he has scored five goals. Last season, he scored twice in three Carling Cup starts, and his lone career Premier League goal came in a 5-0 drubbing of Stoke City in November 2008.
