Jose Mourinho is under pressure. That’s for sure.
Chelsea are going through a stuttering start having failed to win any of their last four games. The Portuguese himself said he is worried about the two back-to-back defeats, but rejects talks of any possible crisis at the club.
For that matter, the situation can hardly be called a crisis. Apart from Liverpool, all other top teams have suffered at least one defeat so far, so from that respect Chelsea aren’t in a crisis. But, even their staunch supporters cannot deny that things can go ugly from here on.
After the game against FC Basel, Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp criticized Chelsea for having no shape and structure. Mourinho is yet to find out the best possible combination for his team while top players like Juan Mata and David Luiz seem out of sorts in his system.
In fact, indirectly Mourinho has criticized his former managers today. He says in the press conference that he is unhappy with the system Chelsea had played in the past two seasons. Further, he has indicated that a change is necessary at the earliest.
But is it the system that has been at fault? Or is it something to do with the mentality of the players? Jose himself said after the defeat at the hands of Basel that his players lacked maturity and attitude.
Whatever the problem is, the truth is Chelsea have yet to strike the right balance in their squad and haven’t given any indication (so far what we have seen) that this team can go a long way, challenging for honours on all fronts. They squad looks weak and vulnerable. They need more strength, grit and spirit than this to win the Premiership title or the Champions League.
And the mental fortitude of the Chelsea players will be tested severely in the month of December-January where they’ll have to face the acid tests in the form of fixture congestion, champions League commitment and three back-to-back Premier League tough games against Arsenal, Swansea and Liverpool.
Mourinho needs to fix the problem NOW. Else, they may have to put their lofty ambitions to bed and set another set of targets accordingly. Can they survive the tough challenge ahead?
